Many anecdotal stories. All interesting and largely rational but are they representative?

MP can vote with their own conscience but must also speak for their constituents.

I regret bringing party politics into this but I don't remember a single occasion since under the highly partisan Johnson or Sunak Tory govts where they allowed MPs to work constructively across party lines, like Starmer has done with this bill. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Whatever the views of the MPs on this, this debate just shown that a lot of them have either no clue how people with terminal diseases die or are so selfish that they would force their own closest relatives to drown in their own vomit and excruciating pain as long as they live an extra day. I watched most of the debate and it was an extremely good one with the well thought and deeply felt views on all sides. That to me is how parliament should work and not all the shouting etc that normally happens.

As I've seen posted elsewhere on here, it's what happens when there's no party whip, and MPs have to actually *persuade* other members of the veracity of their own position, rather than toe the party political line and sit down again.

I don’t think one considered debate will change that perception. Maybe it will be a lightbulb moment for party leaders, whips and MPs and house authorities but I doubt it. It will be business as usual next week.
