Also sometimes you can get a library card for more than one library system. Sometimes a smaller location cannot afford Kanopy, but you can also get a card to someplace that can.

Academic Librarian here - there are titles that are available to public libraries on Kanopy that aren't available for us to license for our university. The public library has access to a catalog containing more entertainment/studio titles to pick from. When I've looked up some of those

requested for course use. So I'd say check the titles offered both places. There is a lot more complexity between Kanopy for public libraries and Kanopy for universities that I won't get in to, but types of titles available is definitely one distinction.

At the time (been a few years so they may have changed how it works) it was a startup/platform cost and then cost per use, so we were looking to budget around 10-12k. This was more than five years ago so the cost may be very different now.

Jeez, I had no idea it was that expensive for the library! Libraries are such an amazing resource, I wish I lived closer to one. Everytime I’ve signed up for kanopy it’s ended in my account being deleted or expiring because I can’t renew my card soon enough 😭😭

the thing is, Kanopy really isn’t that expensive, relatively speaking! Overdrive and Hoopla are the big budget eaters! (But also get a *lot* more use, cause that’s where the ebooks and audiobooks are.)

How much are overdrive and hoopla? I’ve used both in the past. I Can totally see that being the case, it makes sense. I never got to use much of those services tho because of the library card expiration, not giving them proof of membership, or-just generally being shit at time management.
