Bosses think this is a solution that will net them greater productivity. For employees it’s added expense with gas, childcare, parking, etc. It’s actual income loss. Also additional stress over commutes, waking up earlier, loss of work-life balance. For some this is a deal-breaker.

My company required people hired as remote workers 10 years prior to Covid to start working in office if w/in 50 miles of any of the company’s offices. So now we’re going into an office and spending our day on Webex w/folks in different offices in different cities or working from home

For folks in the Boston area, that’s a
1.5-2 hour commute each way. Even w/a shorter commute, it’s wasted time. We work globally so teams across multiple time zones. The commute is inefficient

Exactly. It makes no sense for national/international organizations. Sitting in a cubicle on a Zoom call with a team member thousands of miles away. Face to face has value for sure - but those kinds of meetings can be scheduled 1-2X a week. Five days is arbitrary and archaic for many professions.

I would have to travel to another state overnight to meet with anyone playing a substantive role on any of my teams. There 2 people at the office by me that are extended members of one of my many teams (& they're on different programs that I manage) so even 1-2x/week doesn't get me useful face time

Well, yes, that was largely the point for many of them.

This way they aren't required to pay anyone severance; there are no messy legal disputes about whether a termination was "with cause" because someone doesn't even live near the office anymore.
