I forget people still use Google. although I must admit every now and then DuckDuckGo and Swisscows fail me, and I have to go to Google to find some thing. But since I don’t use it, it doesn’t bury what I’m actually looking for behind what it thinks I want or it wants me to see.
Thank you. I found a way to do it via search results. I typed GoM and stupid ass GoA showed up. The 3 dots gave me slightly different steps but still accomplished saying that it's not called that.
I won't abandon the address. But I will move to interacting with another platform so they don't get clicks on ads or opportunities around that. That's the money.
I don’t know that I can. I switched from Gmail to iCloud already because Gmail sent everything to spam no matter what I did. But now I have 2 accounts going and adding a third… not sure I can do that.
Sounds like you were relying on email forwarding from G? I wouldn't do that - I'd migrate from places starting with the top priority. At some point G would only get mostly spam and stuff I don't care about, for infrequent visits to check. Benefit is avoiding 25 years of marketing history spam.
I have changed to iCloud with each place (no forwarding). I just hate the thought of going through it all again! I can’t figure out how to transfer bookmarks and saved passwords either. 🤣
I have been happy with DDG but I'm starting to run into not being able to access some sites(car dealer).I keep asking what will happen to these options when they go to one state media and intranet- will apps/vpn still work, even be avail to us,etc but never get a response. Are we really that f;&$"d?
Hmm I don’t really use it very often tbh. I use Waze for GPS and sometimes maps too but I hardly ever drive. I guess if I needed to I’d use Apple Maps? Is there a better alternative?
Switch to Signal for personal messaging and phone call. Do not give META or any of this corporate pigs any more of your money! Great start! Brave is also a great browser.
I switched a month ago when I read Google was implementing yet worse privacy invading policies. The “look” of it might not be quite as pretty, but I love “setting fire” to all the pages I’ve opened as they disappear from my history.
I did this years ago and am so grateful for the option. In the event that you’re looking to get away from Gmail, I like both @proton.me and @tutaprivacy.bsky.social.
Not just renaming the gulf of MEXICO but taking away pride month, women's history month, black history month...oh and no diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives....me too!
Me too honestly. I switched to Firefox and now use DuckDuckGo as my exclusive browser. It's amazing that the search engine finds actual websites. Not just YouTube videos and reddit comments like Google does now.
I've used it for years and not once have I had to resort to Google for any searches. Sadly, there seems to be no substitue for the maps, though. If anyone knows of one.....
I'm using #pi.ai for complicated questions, like "what is static electricity" and that is utterly brilliant.
the DDG CEO is a bit sus.. very anti china per his recent essay posted on linkedin.
i went with Ecosia - profits are used to plant trees, plus it imported all my bookmarks and passwords from google chrome 😍
Oh, DDG is my default browser, I just felt it was unnecessarily slow.
I have used Firefox for years--it had some issues a few years ago and I changed to Google.
And, fuck you. Chastising me for wanting a fast search engine and server.
FYI--I have left all corporate consumerism. I can't go to an independent producer of gasoline, so I just drive less and less. I shop at Farmer's Markets, and if I need a gift, I go to a woman-owned art store.
I would gladly join a violent revolution, but we're not there yet.
Can somebody help me out here because this is a legit question from a person who is old enough to remember when there was no such thing as computers, how do I switch from Google to ddg?
After you download the app, make it your default browser. When you want info about something, click on the Duck Duck Go app instead of Google or Chrome.
Okay that seems pretty simple. Don't mean to come off as dumb I just am not very good at these kind of things. With delight I just figured out how to empty the garbage can on my phone LOL
I agree. I made DuckDuckGo my default on my phone and using Firefox more where I can at work. I have so much integration with Google which I'm sure is part of what they count on, and like you I feel every bit counts and I'll continue to choose other options where I can.
Yes. I have a Samsung and literally my messages were Google. Because it had cooler features. So I went back to Samsung messages. Un-installed chrome and use Firefox. Switched to Bing for now.
Realized crap my email, cloud etc is Google. It'll be a slow transition but I'm doing it.
I dumped Proton - forgotten why now. I didn't like the layout, I think. I've used https://fastmail.com for years and it's totally brilliant and integrates with Mozilla's Thunderball very well on phone, tablet and laptop.
To be honest my gmail inbox is at an embarrassing number anyway so will be good to switch and have a fresh start. Will be a slow integration though probably worth it!
Wow, I had stopped watching LTT but these videos were good and I did sign up for a paid Proton Mail account. My Gmail is very small but I can use it to see if I want to dump MS as well.
Me too - safer more secure option. The more people that do that, the more a message is sent to enablers/bootlickers like Google. Stop shopping at Amazon (https://bookstore.org great option), support local stores & businesses and bigger companies that aren't folding e.g. Costco.
That's weird because I can read it without issue. TL:DR duckduckgo gives your info to Microsoft. They got caught and swore they would stop, they didn't. This time THEY SWEAR never to do it again.
I switched to Ecosia a couple weeks ago. However, I saw a comment earlier about it having something to do with Google. Can someone clarify if Ecosia is a good alternative? I like the idea of them planting trees when we use it. 🌲
Their site says that when you search with Ecosia, they use both Microsoft Bing & Google to do the searching. These are the exact words from Ecosia's privacy page:
"... when you search through Ecosia, we work with either Microsoft Bing or Google to provide you with search results and ads."
Same here. I'm on android which makes it very difficult to break away from google products as much as I'd like to. Considering switching to apple but they have their own issues.
DuckDuckGo as a browser is built on Google’s Chromium, which means it’s not much different than Chrome behind the surface. Bing is built on Chromium too
You might want to try Brave (a non-tracking browser) and Ecosia, a non-tracking search engine that spends all of its profit planting trees; they've planted over 225 million trees around the world.

I've dumped Meta and am moving forward with Google. The worst parts of dumping G will be Gmail and getting off of YouTube TV.
... to avoid some DuckDuckGo or other current alternative going to the dark side and forcing change.

I'm using Edge.
If you want to support the oligarchy because of minor inconvenience, that’s on you.
I have had zero performance issues since changing on Windows (10 & 11). No issues on iOS either.
I have used Firefox for years--it had some issues a few years ago and I changed to Google.
And, fuck you. Chastising me for wanting a fast search engine and server.
What have YOU done to destroy the Oligarchy?
I’m gonna go touch grass now.
I apologize for mischaracterizing you.
I would gladly join a violent revolution, but we're not there yet.
I’ve given talks on Internet Privacy before and always recommend it.

Yeah sigh, I have a Google Pixel and love it.
So I don't know yet
I’ve offered alt platforms & resources to do so
I’d appreciate anyone seeing this to take a look, all I ask is share it with someone
We propped them up, we can take them down 💚
Agree. Every little bit…
But can’t quite kick Google maps or gmail yet…
The fire cleaning mimic is also a nice dopamine boost.
"... when you search through Ecosia, we work with either Microsoft Bing or Google to provide you with search results and ads."
I wonder if there are any workarounds?
