Best principal I ever had spent every morning of his first semester in our building just hanging out in the hall, watching, chatting. I talked w/ him about it later. He said, "when you're new, you take time to watch & learn." And he stopped by classrooms OFTEN and asked us, "How can I help you?"

The sad part is this should be a non brainer. Anyone visiting a new space, new people...is important to get the boundaries from them, to pay attention to their signals, to listen and be open to learn the environment.

That’s a good lesson for teacher as well. Sometimes I try to redirect a student I don’t know well and fail cause even as someone who works in the building and interact with a hundred + kids on the daily I can still screw up with a student I don’t take the time to get to know well before redirecting.
