It's a pretty important illustration that Trump support isn't because economically disadvantaged whites were left behind. Otherwise it wouldn't be the case one could cite that "meaningless statistic" because it wouldn't be true.

I live in Massachusetts one of the best places to live in the country and where white people are doing extremely well. More people voted for Trump here than in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana combined. The richest whitest towns by me went Trump.

I agree that trump support is based mostly in spoiled, angry, brainwashed and primarily white grievance (i.e. faux news zombies) not economic circumstance. BUT comparing voting numbers in the Dakotas to those of any coastal metropolitan area is indeed meaningless due simply to differences in scale.

I worked with guys from central Minnesota small towns in my 20's, and they were all fleeing small town life, most were alcoholics and addicts and most ended up dying at an early age usually in car crashes. This mechanical-bucolic vision of rural America is simply bullshit.

Im tired of people giving the small town pass for Trump voters. I grew up in, and live now in a town of 4,000. I have only a high school diploma, and I drive 25 miles for work. I'm also super left progressive, because I can feel basic EMPATHY. The racism is the platform most of them voted for. Sorry

It's only meaningful because of the design of the American electoral system, not because support for Donald Trump is fundamentally about rural or post-industrial disaffection. Even in those parts of the country, most people go for Trump for the same reasons other Americans do.

I'd agree that the design of your electoral system is fatally flawed at this point, and that one person one vote simply isn't true, especially when it comes to senate seats. Wyoming having 2 and Cali having 2 is ridiculous. But comparing Dakota numbers to NY numbers really just muddies the waters.

And I would guess that those inherited affinities are more likely to prevail in less densely-populated places, where there is nothing like the constant influx of new people (and new categories of people) people in more cosmopolitan places are bound to experience. Stagnation reinforces homogeneity.

Trump didn’t win California or LA, but I take it as a bad sign that he got the most votes he ever has in LA last year. Those gains in the coastal elite cities are in many ways more telling and more troubling than the same people voting for him consistently for a decade
