Got to go inside the new, restored Notre Dame today. Incredible light. It all looks brand new somehow. Astonishing to think how they rebuilt this roof. Even crazier to think they were able to build this to begin with centuries ago.

And let's have no nonsense about opportunity cost, no more people have gone hungry because of it.
Where is GOD in all of it?
In Europe, where?? 🤷🏽♂️
Maybe you could wear sunglasses?
So glad to see it restored like that. Those stones haven’t been so clean since they were carved.

When I went 25 years ago, it was dark and dismal.
I was very disappointed.
Zoom in on the gold fixture on the ceiling of the blue stained glass pic😱🤣
And who can tell what’s old & what has been rebuilt? From what I’ve seen no one will be able to tell the difference. The old has become new. Pre-fire history erased.
Check out how Carlo Scarpa dealt with these issues.
Anyways, throughout France they've been cleaning the centuries of grime off cathedrals and basilicas. These aren't only monuments, btw, they're still living houses of worship whose owners prioritized vibrant worship over grimy clutter.
I hope to see it soon & might change my opinion, but it appears to be the latter.
Other than meticulous research & craftsmanship, what in the restoration reflects our time to be appreciated by generations to come?
1. Toxic substances like lead were left from the fire.
2. Some stones had to be replaced, which would have led to an extreme contrast between new and original stone.
Previously they had no plan to clean it, but the fire forced changes.
But the work is amazing, & I look forward to seeing it.
What actually washed away history is WWII bombing-should we just be looking at piles of rubble? Or the rebuilt cities of Europe?
I hope her builders can see her, and are pleased with how lovely she is now she's cleaned up and renewed.
I don't think I would have the same reaction the way it looks now.
It’s time that woman was cured of her liver disease!

Glad they saved it.
Kind of like a pre-computer CAD sort of deal.
What an honor to rebuild Notre Dame.
An incredible series of videos here.

I’m in awe.

Charpentiers sans frontières is a group that formed some years ago to learn/teach ancient techniques, and they work on OLD buildings. For example, they rebuilt a wooden drawbridge for an 11th century castle in Normandy.
It was just a light Monday morning crowd. Try early tomorrow.
Thanks for sharing 🥰
Just sadistic torture
War mongering malignancy
Beautiful!
Stunned by the freshness of the colors on all the cleaned paintings and the well-lit side chapels. I remember how dark it all was before.
It's a structure of immense beauty -- a very important artifact from our recent past -- and many people contributed heavily to save her. Many other people contributed their time and their skills.
I’ve been there twice. And like many other cathedrals & centuries-old buildings, when you walk in, there’s a particular musty, damp smell.
This is an amazing article about the rebuilding -- and there are photos of some of the workers, including the ones who were in "the forest."
