i think the timing of the release was off. day after christmas with very little promo? kind of makes sense in theory but didn't seem to work. also season 1's blow up was a tough-to-repeat flash in the pan moment
I don’t think Netflix goes for or needs “cultural impact.” It probably did crazy numbers for the habitual subscribers who binged it between Xmas and nye. That’s enough for them!
totally. i just saw some of their data & it did well & they’re very happy with it. it’s just interesting how season 1 consumed the world to the point I had to binge it to avoid spoilers, meanwhile and i’ve only heard a few conversations about season 2.
I think one of the reasons is that their decision to split the season up made this new one feel incomplete. 6 hours to get zero closure of anything took all the air out of it.
I really enjoyed the first season, but their decision to spin it into an actual reality series, Squid Game: The Challenge, was pretty grotesque and it turned me off so much, I don’t have any interest in season two.

The upcoming final season of "Stranger Things" will be a very different story, however.
(That and the Xmas timing was kinda dumb.)
I don’t understand why something so successful needed to change anything except maybe some of the games.
