drives me crazy every time i see it

i get the resentful sentiment, i really do - but then my brain kicks in and reminds me that we're all stuck in this boat together whether we like it or not

I agree with you. We are all impacted by these realities. Hope solidarity required in this moment is achieved & white faculty & others do not go back to watching very few Black folks get hired & when they do don’t acknowledge anti-Black racism b/c they are so focussed on one site of oppression

It makes me angry that protecting my freedom is tied to protecting the freedom of other people to reject the uncomfortable knowledge I bring and also reject me as the angry messenger of humanism that insists they need to do their part in protecting everyone's freedom, their own too, not just mine.

I think a lot of people confuse "having empathy" with "defending"? Or more generally they just see empathy as weakness, maybe.

The bullies are potential allies if you offer them guidance and safety that surpasses the only defensive system they've known. They band together and scare you preemptively cos they're scared themselves. I wonder how many antifascists may be reformed, well, you know what. Somebody didn't reject them

I think that's true, and I also think that even if some or most of those people will never be turned into allies, we need to continue to have empathy for them. Otherwise it leads to dehumanization and nothing good comes of that.

I need more knowledge about the subcategories of these people and how to deal with the worst of them, the psychopaths on top. The best source could be a psychopath's former victim, a disempowered rival or a disgruntled subordinate.

The difference between understanding and excusing is important. I can understand the reasons why someone joins bad movements or adopts horrible beliefs. That’s empathy.

But that doesn’t mean I excuse it. Reasons don’t eliminate accountability.

Plus, like, suffering is bad. I want to minimize how much suffering there is for everyone. I think that's a reasonable goal for society to have. I don't want my enemies to suffer because I don't want anyone to suffer. I just want my enemies stopped so they can't force others to suffer.

It's like trying to take a skittish cat to the vet, then finding out you have to give them pills for two weeks. 🤦

It was hard enough getting them in the crate. Now I have to wrangle them twice a day to PILL THEM??
