Never Say Die's title track has the upbeat energy and tempo that Iommi and Ozzy would find in Blizzard and Heaven; but You Won't Change Me off TE has a lot of sounds that sound like a roadmap to Blizzard.

I know there’s more nuance than I’m going to be able give in a skeet, but to me, TE and NSD sound decidedly “not metal” compared to past albums, while BOO and HAH are very clearly metal albums, which makes the former albums more of a diversion than a transition to my ears

Thats fair. I think part of that nuance though just boils down to BOO & HAH as part of the NWOBHM, which objectively was taking Sabbath and adding Punk energy(Iron Maiden for example) which Sabbath tried in that era and kinda failed at.

The problem with Technical Ecstasy is that while it has some high highs (It's Alright, You Won't Change Me) it also has some low lows (Rock n Roll Doctor, Dirty Women) BUT it is where they had that sonic breakthrough

The Sabbath Bloody Sabbath -> Never Say Die! period was an interesting and, especially initially, fruitful direction for the band. As much as I love Dio as a singer, and his time in the band resulted in excellent material, I think it also resulted in the band ossifying. Iommi no longer explored.

Ah the ages old question: is the classic Sabbath run four, five or six albums? It seems to expand as the years go on. I always thought it was a clear step down from "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" but I think the growing consensus is that it's the last essential Ozzy album.

The post-Ozzy of Sabbath is still great. Obviously the 3 Dio albums (4 if you count The Devil You Know, which you should) are the high point, but Tyr is excellent too, and Born Again is underrated, and the others aren't bad just forgettable.
