Trump singlehandedly killed the USFL, which was growing as a spring/summer alternative to the NFL in the 1980s. Trump owned the NJ franchise and convinced/threatened the other owners to move the season to the fall to compete directly with the NFL. They did, it failed + USFL folded within months.

This was part of a plan to force the NFL to merge or buy out the league after winning an antitrust lawsuit. They did win the suit, but because the decision to move was so obviously suicidal, the jury only awarded $1 of damages, tripled to $3

Basically Trump has wanted an NFL team for decades and always been outbid/shut out. After his first bid in the 80s failed he bought an USFL team. Instead of letting that league grow though...

He used his charisma to take control of the league and instead of letting the league grow momentum in the spring and summer he decided they should move to the fall to directly compete with the NFL. They never did though. They sued the NFL in an antitrust suit which they won but were awarded $1
