You know the TSA guys are a common punchline but the part of the airport/travel experience that has fucked me has never been security, which has always been relatively straightforward if you’re at all an experienced traveler.

It's not that it's difficult to plan around, it's just largely pointless and degrading. They check for things that aren't threats, don't check things that are, and make you feel like a dehumanized slab of beef while they do it. Just because it's doable doesn't mean it doesn't suck
ICE on the other hand. My welcome to the US was being detained by ICE with a valid visa for the entire runtime of Return of the Jedi because their machine at the desk had twuble reading my fingerprints.
On the upside, I guess I got to watch Return of the Jedi on mute.
I know people complain about them, but I genuinely think it's nice that there's one place in America (the sky) that I don't need to worry about a mass shooting
Primary issue is that people remember a terrible experience at the airport, and they recall being yelled at by TSA agent, and link the latter to the former
Not saying that people haven’t been like racially profiled or anything, but the median complaint about airport security seems to be “they made me miss my flight that I came to the airport 30 mins before with 3 bags to check!”
I was banned from doing carry-on iron skillet to, after they spent a while thinking about it. Was moving to Germany and everything irreplaceable was in carry-on luggage.
But I just checked it. It was a smaller airport so this probably helped the logistics.
in some sense, I think replacing the TSA with a more socially-oriented checkpoint that simply made sure you didn't leave anything behind would both have the same security impact and probably help a few folks out
while annoying and screwing up the same group of people
It depends. If you are at LAX and you have a disability, they will do seriously bad things to you. My wife is one of several wheelchair users I know who have horror stories about TSA agents there.
But I also, as a frequent flying, non gun owning, non criminal, am actually comfortable giving the government whatever data and biometric info they desire so that I could just swipe my DL or passport and walk through a door.

Ban TikTok and then Clear.

So you’d see checkpoints with tip jars.
At JFK.
After 9/11.
(This post isn’t mine - but I saw this at T8 Nov 2001)
"Not allowed for carry on"
"Maybe you can mail it"
wtf

I’ll take metal detectors to get into sensitive places all day long thank you.
