I'm starting to think that repeatedly grooming NYC machine pols to be the next generation of Democratic congressional leadership was one of the great mistakes of the post-Citizens United era. Their loyalties are misplaced, their instincts unhelpful, & above all they are visibly, painfully soft

It's directly linked to the unvarnished aging of the Demcaucus, especially in leadership. They're last century's politicians. There's not enough appreciation for the fact that we have the ACA because of Pelosi. Not Obama, not Reid. Pelosi made it happen. A generational talent.

But as has been said elsewhere, good legislators are not what we need right now. We need good politicians. Schumer and Jeffries are neither.

I think it depends on the job, obviously they need more people better able to navigate modern media than they have right now (eg in a presidential nominee) but congressional management (esp when you're as good at it as her) is also important, and is really a lot of the point so you can't ignore it

He seems to be good at keeping the caucus vote a single entity generally and is well connected to the big money donors. I think party of grooming for leadership for its pros and cons is someone being unlikely to lose their seat. Look at what has happened to all of the last Republican speakers
