The UK will put a shift in on this, not sure re-litigating UK departure from EU right now is helpful.The solution to this will not come from those entirely within the EU anyway, neither will it provide the institutions to do - unless the EU is going to deal with Hungary et al (which it won’t).

Very right. The EU is still bound in bigger things by the right to veto (which belongs gone but that may take creating a new organization, a little bit like with the UN that's paralyzed) on the other hand we have powerful and willing countries outside, UK but also Norway.

I don't think we can just blame the US and accept defeat against Russia. It looks like the EU is developing into a real federal state, although slowly, and that inevitably means having its own armed forces. In turn that means the EU dwarfing Russia in military power but also being a rival to the US.
