Former retail worker, I've had a lot of rude people and I'm always told to just smile and treat them with kindness. Not when they threaten to beat my butt, accuse me of being on drugs, and thrown half eaten ice cream at me over denying them a refund, they should do our work until then.
Absolutely. I worked in retail, including over Christmas, and to this day have never been rude to retail workers. I had my share of stress and abuse from the public and I know how it feels.
As a former retail worker. Nope to black Friday shopping. Nope to Xmas shopping. Got my mad stack of gift cards for all them nieces and nephews and I'm done. Gift cards are the best gift! Imma gonna share that belief to all of them 😄
I was a retail manager for 35 years. Xmas is especially difficult and very physically hard on associates. Unfortunately this season can bring out the worst in people.
I’m a mail carrier and every single December, especially the days preceding Christmas, customers will approach me to say the same line “my package was supposed to arrive on the 20th” and without missing a beat I’ll say “only express mail packages and envelopes have a guaranteed delivery date.
I have empathy for them all but I don’t condone yelling at me because you chose the cheapest option, ground advantage, which can take 7-10 business days when you ordered your gift late, on December 15th and expect it to be under the tree on the 24th. Ain’t happening.
Interestingly yesterday am I went to a Apple Store and the security agent was so rude, I thought he was going to tase me because I opened the door to the store at 9:58 am not knowing that the store opened at 10:00 am . Everyone needs to chill out
Tis the season of higher than average rates theft. We had a guy just walk right out our door with a rabbit habitat yesterday into a waiting cab.
Security has every right to be extra vigilant.
I worked retail for a while when I was young and I'll tell you some shameful facts. People will buy anything if it's cheap enough. Christmas is scary in stores. God forbid you run out of the item they want! But after Christmas, I have seen fist fights in the checkout line for a 10¢ clearance item.
"Until they're treated rudely" might only be ten minutes in retail world. Give them a real punishment. Make them work as a cashier or at the customer service desk on a busy day.
I was a cashier as a University student and was called "stupid" regularly, by people without a high school education. Believe me, I could spot them. It was a rough, working class neighbourhood.
To the shopper it is a 60 second exchange that they won't give a second thought an hour from now. To the retail worker it is yet another of 200 jerks in an 8 hour shift that thinks the person at the register sets the prices, controls stock levels, parking enforcement....it's relentless.
Punishment doesn’t fit the crime. People are condescending and rude to retail workers on the regular and it’s quite eye opening.
I just think the retail workers should get unlimited “get out of trouble free cards” for non violently defending themselves and putting assholes in their place!
You should hear the jackasses who honk at my Amazon delivery van for blocking them on narrow streets with cars parallel parked everywhere. Or worse, the ones who honk at me for crossing a residential street with an arm full of packages, making them slow down and wait 10 seconds in their warm cars.
People are walking around angry and dangerous. Had a 19-20 boy swing at me in a parking lot a few days ago. I'm 71. It didn't go well for him. Probably should have called the law.
Why? Fascist Nazi oppression and to remove all obstacles from their greed and power. It's the 21st century Nazi Fourth Reich complete with mass arrests and violence. Hitler's was the Third Reich.
Go to your favorite music streaming service. Listen to how the world works by Bo Burham and realize the popo have been hired to protect the corporate interests. So cute you think WWII ended when instead of creating energy created chaos.
The public does punish you for working retail. So perhaps if the e public had to deal with their behavior they would possibly learn that retail workers are people. 🤷♀️
There is a special place for those who do not understand that they are not mind readers and still continue to show cruelty to those that give them a grace they do not deserve... metaphorically speaking.
Why are people so rude during Christmas shopping? Relax and enjoy. Embrace the crowds and the slower pace. The crowds are kind of what makes it special.
Went to the Mall of America yesterday. Most crowded I have seen that place in a long time.
Also, it has to be genuinely nice, too, not just taking the oblivious, none reciprocal interaction that sums up a good number of customers give as being so.
If you think working the day before Christmas is bad, try working the day after when alien monsters throw returns at sales people like they forced someone to buy the wrong present!
Are there even people still going to the stores anymore? Amazon and other online e-commerce giants are single handedly destroying retail brick and mortar operations. So be nice to retail workers. They are a dying breed we will surely miss.
I was so polite as a customer at first. Then, as a sales clerk, 6years, customers & coworkers were shyt nasty as h3ll. Since I encountered such behavior, I deserve VIP as a customer, now! But guess what? Workers are LAZY, nasty, racist & elitist only want to help rich white, attractive customers.
Absolutely. Just don't do it to anyone and hope they pass that on. Fuck, it ain't science because they don't teach science any more.
Quit hating.
Use that energy to fix this broken boat we are floating on.
Once I worked customer service in retail. A Russian woman threw a blouse in my face. I lost it and pushed it back into her face. I didn't lose my job (a part time gig) and I felt much better.

if everyone had to work retail for two weeks and be a waiter or waitress for two weeks the world would be a different place.
