That really was a signal moment. I think it's significant that so many people remember it. It was the time Democrats revealed they would rather make up obstacles to progress than make any progress.
Watching how quickly all this is happening and thinking back to Chuck Schumer saying if we give them what they want now there will be a better opportunity for resistance in six months.
It was honestly so shocking dude. Like I expected @schumer.senate.gov to be dog shit, but I did not expect him to validate everything DOGE and Trump have done and concede literally the entirety of their bargaining power.
That's when the Parliamentarian takes on the role of the Designated Villain, usually given to one senator or so to allow others to say they tried to do the right thing, but gee.
Yes
Anyone with common sense knew they were lying. And you didn’t need a college degree to realize that Biden would never raise the minimum wage. He is a Jim Crow guy. Southern states do pay workers -$7.25hr.
(I've posted this before so apologies for the redundancy)
Although I've never been there myself, I'm convinced that there's an electric neon sign hanging on the wall in the lobby of the DNC in D.C. with their credo:
The corporate democrats don’t really want any substantive change, so they just like to use any minor roadblock they encounter as an excuse for their inaction.
The Senate is an absurd institution—on that point and on an abundance of levels—and will need to be abolished for any sane decision-making to come out of Congress.
When had the Senate ever been responsible for good governance?
Worse, the Senate was specifically instilled by the slave states, along with the Electoral College and the 3/5ths rule, to prevent the more voter-filled North from abolishing slavery. The Senate was perfidy from the beginning.
That enraged me at the time. The Rs were already the shameless party of trump. They would not have respected the rules, even then. I am sick of asking when TF are the Ds going to start fighting back.
Hakeem's mantra that Dems need to move to the "center" seems weird. Does he mean adopt more Maga ideas to appease...whom, donors (aka the real constituents)?Just shows how toxic the entire US political system is. Completely embraced in toxic capitalism.
Like the GOP is going to give a shit what an entirely advisory officer who doesn't even have a vote, much less a veto, has to say about their priorities
The senate is weird, but there’s been a lot of reporting on this and yeah there’s a critical mass of R senators who do care because they’re convinced firing this person (they’d have to fire them, it’s not just an advisory position) would be beneficial to Dem spending bills in the long run
If the Senate parliamentarian says that they cannot use current policy baseline accounting for reconciliation, then they cannot use the reconciliation process. Unless they fire her and replace her with someone that will agree with them. But there’s actually a lot of Republican reticence to doing so.
Putin wanted the Soviet glory back to counter the U.S. So he installed his puppets in the ex-soviet republics, except the Ukraine, so far. His biggest prize is to install one in the U.S. He succeeded. To expand his power, he wants Canada, Greenland, & Panama.
France is leading the EU to stop him.
Not a single president deserves to be remembered favorably tbh, they’re all war criminals and profiteers. At least Carter attempted to make some kind of karmic amends in his life.
props to Lincoln and the Roosevelts for their inklings of goodness as well. JFK maybe for the martyr aspect. Give in to the temptation of the office or face the barrel of a gun is a tough choice admittedly
Lincoln didn’t actually do anything though, and wasn’t all that against slavery. Enslaved people did most of the work to free themselves, with some help (not much) from white abolitionists. Teddy said the gcide of indigenous people was like a glorious accomplishment, FDR did internment camps
I said inklings. And I’m trying to be generous here. Ya sure Lincoln didn’t do anything like pick the guys to fix the Union armies lol that’s gotta count for something
Nope, just accurate. Every single president engaged in acts of mass violence and oppression and furthered the existence and agenda of capitalistic imperialism
Also tbh referring to any point of the American political system as great is false, inherently, due to the lack of basic human rights for people the entire time
Yeah he also was actively involved in the further demonization of the Middle East as an entire region feeding into Islamophobic racism and justifying constant warfare and basically colonization and theft of resources enacted by the American military
Lincoln didn’t actually do shit though people credit him with wayyyyy too much. TBH JFK actually was making significant moves that probably would’ve been big positives but alas. And now we just get his shitty little fascistic nephew
Similarly, Biden's climate funding could have been a game-changer, but Trump is unconstitutionally ending it. But in myriad other ways, Biden was terrible - top two: Gaza and running for a second term.
Idk about that... I think healthcare is more expensive and lower quality than prior to aca
Served as a boondoggle to make us think they were doing something. Written by insurance industry so how could it be anything beneficial to the people?
It’s well known that the Koch Brothers took a long view 20 years ago while the Dems have been living on $8.00 lattes, a wing and a prayer. In-fighting and lack of appreciation that “all politics is local” is how we got here. :/
Give them 1 term, watch what they do and not what they say. If they play games or run cover for the other team or donors, simply stick together, vote them out. Give them a use by date also, you need representative's that are motivated for the voters who elected them.
Imagine the irreversible damage that would have been done to our government and its time honored system of checks and balances had the democrats acted without the blessing of the parliamentarian which is a position we’d all been very aware of. Really dodged a bullet.
I trust that Chuck will write his best strongly worded letter yet that will get Trump to stop his madness. Any day now. I have faith in Chuck’s powerful letters. A real leader in these dark times.
Then people defending it for years, with the only counter argument being sinema& mansion will switch parties. Acting as if that would be a functional difference
Watching people actively deny that Manchin / Sinema were part of a carefully selected group that could do these things and that many Dems would join if it was safe was MADDENING. People are actively living in a delusional fantasy.
When I become President of the Senate, I'm going to decree that only George Clinton— or, in his absence, George Clinton impersonators— shall be given the title of Parliamentarian
I keep thinking about how Biden couldn't use a law that said he could discharge student debt when that was literally in the text of the law, and now Trump is signing objectively unlawful EOs every fucking day, and it's just like... well, he's the president what are you gonna do?
also i think it’s important that people not misunderstand the issue here. it’s not a case of the democrats being weak or too willing to play by the rules or anything of the sort, it’s much simpler than that, they just don’t want to do the things you want them to do
The Democrats agree with 95% of what Trump and Elon are doing. The other 5% can be used as performative opposition. Black women, socialist, and communists can kick back and watch the Ouroboros eat itself while saying, "we told you so." We tried to help, but you told us to FO.

It’s why Schumer fvkked us yesterday, it’s why Biden fvkked the student loans, it’s why that NY Gov didn’t get rid of the NYC Mayor.
They take their orders from the 1% of the 1% of the 1%.
Demochimps are garbage.
Ferfvxxsake, stick it to them just as hard and often as they stick it to us.
But nah, CitizensUnited cleared a path that politicians only listen to their huge corporate donors.
Set it all ablaze…

Theyre in charge of precedent, but don't have any veto power.

If the parliamentarian had given them the go-head they would have found a different reason.
That & how they didn't passed the ERA in the 1st two years of the Obama Presidency.
If they wanted to, they would.
When will ppl realize no one in DC office is gonna stop anything.
Even WH & congressional staff have protested.
The parliamentarian is there to advise. The position carries no power and is not elected nor codified by the Constitution.
