I think George is noting the difference in the pictures of Stalin, not that Stalin was "Person of the Year." First one makes Stalin look like a villain, second like a hero. Time's choice of pictures of Trump makes him like a hero. Time should be ashamed.
there was a time the person of the year had the respect of the readers could only afford THAT one issue to save, this years chosen one explains perfectly why no SANE, LAW ABIDING person gives a sh*t anymore,if they ever wanted to or even could earn the respect back, should 'a gone with Kamala
Ugh! I just posted about TIMES myself… I didn’t realize the history. I find this quite distasteful and wondered why don’t they choose people who others can aspire to. This seems to glorify the individual. Why?
Time has repeatedly denied that "Person of the Year" is an endorsement, but A) they most frequently give it to admirable figures, and B) the title almost universally belongs to an award. If it's not celebratory, they should call it something else. The misinterpretation should not be a surprise.
I guess Trump's self aggrandizing needed a boost? I get Time's methodology ('most impact, good or bad') but to my mind, Time's decision did two things: protected themselves from retribution and willingly became complicit in everything Trump.
Doesn’t Trump love murderous fascist tyrants though? He would see this as a compliment. Sadly his supporters likely do too. Many of them would vote for Stalin and Hitler if they blamed inflation and the border crisis they started on the Dems or burned down the Reichstag and blamed communists.
Yep, it's based on the impact not whether the person is good or evil. Hitler, Stalin and Putin have been on the cover and all are evil, as is Diaper Dementia Donnie.
Each time this edition comes out, Time has to explain the pick is determined by who has had the most impact—good or bad. When "Man of the Year" first arrived in 1927, few realized it was also the birth of "clickbait".
It came about when someone asked, "How can we sell more magazines?"
So true that. Media has mostly always been about making money. That dude froze millions and millions of farmers in box cars when they (Ukrainians) refused to communize.
It’s just a weird idea they have about the criteria, considering the Person of the Year implies something to celebrate. Maybe this was the precursor to shock jocks.
except they do make "valued" definite america centric and now i dare say trump favouring choices - for instance (this is usually the main example given) why did they not give it to osama bin-laden in 2000 rather than guiliani? and why was einstein awarded man of the century instead of hitler?
omg yes i got carried away with the zeros apologies
i am not necessarily arguing for these people, just repeating arguments - that to me prove that there is nothing scientific about times award
so even if they are choosing a bad or good guy - they are still biased for some agenda of their own - some topics are "just too hot to handle" like 2001 - and now possibly there is fear like we have seen with other newsy type sources.
Frankly, I don’t give a damn about this distinction. Legacy media chose to make this man newsworthy, constantly bathing him in the most ridiculously sane-washing light, thereby paving his return to the White House. He deserves to be in the dustbin of history.
This reply needs to be higher up and all in bolded caps. It's ridiculous how many people freak out about this every year. You think they'd learn after almost 100 years. 🙄
i mean the news is ALWAYS negative... is it really that annoying to you that, for once, people wanted something positive to look forward to? cmon every news story is a shooting or war or human trafficking. you are rly that bothered that people thought they would get ONE piece of positivity?
yeah it just makes me think of when i was a student and we would watch unbiased news and half my classmates wouldnt know what to think, they would just know that it is... nowadays they dont even have to think for themselves, just spoon fed by whichever party is closer to them..
@gtconway.bsky.social you’re incredible at this. Can you make these Time covers a commercial that plays when the new one comes out? Partner with the Lincoln project maybe?

For the record, Time's person of the year doesn't indicate they are good people, just people that have made a significant change in global politics. Hitler was also a person of the year.
I wish this made me feel better. Obviously Time has a history of sucking but it would be nice if they learned from their failings. Journalism is failing at a rapid rate. 😞
"An annual issue of the American news magazine and website Time featuring a person, group, idea, or object that "for better or for worse ... has done the most to influence the events of the year.'"
It's unfortunate that Time decided to call it "Man (or whatever) of the Year." In hindsight, they probably should have used "Newsmaker" or something. Though I doubt people in the 1930s thought Hitler and Stalin were being honored. 😒
Never. They just magically appear in Dentists' waiting rooms 7 years after their publishing date. Rod Serling did an episode about it in Twilight Zone.
Rather than just posting the cover art, you might do better to dig up the actual articles. (Tip: 𝘯𝘰-𝘰𝘯𝘦, 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘦 was praising Hitler's ally Joseph Stalin in 1940.)
I’m not entirely sure when people were convinced that “Person of the Year” meant they were praising the person. It’s never meant that. It was meant to highlight the person who dominated the news cycles and kitchen table discussions. For good or bad.
Yes. Rather than playing into the normalization of the con man, focus the light on other aberrant dictators. Ultimately things did not turn out well for them.
What’s your point dumb fk? Popes, Martin Luther King, Jimmy Carter, John Kennedy and other have gotten this honor. Quit embarrassing yourself you stupid MFer.

What can you do other than adapt to this. Im an europe - and verry worried but we need to just cope
Probably, but 19.5 million will be due to his gross incompetence…

Done and done.
Not people to praise.
"A person, group, idea, or object that 'for better or for worse ... has done the most to influence the events of the year.'"
Who did that in 1939 more than Hitler?
It was Hitler in 1938.
This is super disturbing.
And sort of comforting in a weird way- Time can really suck on their Person of the Year choices. Ergo Drump.
Talk about a psychotic mass murderer.
“Most influential”, not “the guy we want to have marry my daughter”
It came about when someone asked, "How can we sell more magazines?"
Not the most WORTHY person
It's arguable that #hitler was NOT the person who generated the most news in 20th century
But the choice of #Einstein was a head scratcher. He was not exactly a driver of news
i am not necessarily arguing for these people, just repeating arguments - that to me prove that there is nothing scientific about times award
If you want a popularity list, read People Magazine.
Also, news needs to go back to just reporting what happened. I don't want you to tell me what I should think about what happened
Bring back #HLN. That was a FAB half hour.

I think people are upset about this one because this helps him at a time when he needs to be opposed.
Plus he always wanted to be on the cover like this. Why give him what he wants😩
No?
Oh, right…
"...in which Time recognizes the individual or group of individuals who have had the biggest impact on news headlines over the past 12 months."
This pissed off the people that actually read things and buy magazines and newspapers.
So, wow…that was some super smart business planning.
