I think everybody who thinks they know exactly what should be done here is kidding themselves. We're in terra incognita.
There's also the argument that if you want Congress to assert its power over budgeting, then the worst thing to do is fail to pass a budget and cede all power to the WH.

I do think it's worth wondering if this will be a normal shutdown, given that the GOP effectively wants to make a shutdown the permanent state of the government. It's not a reason to pass a bad budget, but there's a reasonable concern there.

Third option- vote no and acknowledge the need to burn this all to the ground. Give incompetence a chance to destroy itself. It will.

Let these freaks deal with the shutdown as the markets melt down. Let them declare martial law, let's have the fight now rather than September
(And yet.. I think you’re right. Trump wants a shutdown)
Like yes I can see both sides but if there was ever a time we need to choose to fight it's now
On the whole I’m “for” the apparent Dem strategy of remaining the “grownups in the room.”
This anguish the trump people are triggering is definitely intentional.
And, given enough rope, they will certainly, eventually, hang themselves…
Wise post!! Ty🕊
The value of different concessions for D votes is definitely debatable - but voting for a spending bill you will campaign against with no concessions is political malpractice.
But I have to disagree here.
Strongly.
Being in new territory doesn't mean being lost. There's still something called a moral compass. It's supposed to point to what's right.
This shit is just wrong.
A no vote is the only option. And hey, starving the beast may be the only thing that stops Trump from launching simultaneous wars against Canada, Panama, and Greenland.
If it's all shut down, GOP has to at least try to work to get what they want.
How will that change by giving them what they want right now?
We keep trying to put off the fight, there won't be any opportunity to fight later.
I just don't believe the admin are that worried about decisions coming out of the courts presently.
Could be wrong.
And Dems can’t say Trump/musk are horrible, bad for the country and then FUND the destruction of the country.
If Trump seizes funds illegally, then at least the sham is exposed and we will have a demonstration that Congress has no power.
A Shutdown is the lesser evil.
Stop the bill then they medicaid and social security we now have advantage against them because what they did is illegal.
Even thought result may look the same that is not the case. It's basically quiting job vs being fired
Stop acting like Democrats can’t go in front of cameras everyday to highlight the worst aspects of the GOP-led shutdown.
Make the GOP own it.

The CR gives Trump more power (haven't seen the particulars). We can be timid or we can be as bold as we can.
The regime is going to do what it's going to do...
And whatever happens with this budget, the BS will continue in some form and people will suffer and be very mad about it – insisting that the budget fight should have gone the other way.
We've seen reports that some of the Rs in congress are staying quiet for fear of reprisal from Trump. I honestly wouldn't mind if they feared for their lives and livelihoods back home.
If he thinks this is the right call, he has to convince people of that and he doesn't seem to be trying very hard. He's playing 4D chess against public opinion, not his actual opponents.
I don't know! But nobody really does. I'm just suggesting humility.
This is a civil war.
A new union must form from the ashes of our current structures, which is now exploiting instead of serving the people.
I’ll let the guys that didn’t pass a bill legalizing theft and murder how it’s going.
Capitulation to an abuser is not the way.
History taught us how to stand up to bullies.
But I will point out that in every other shutdown fight in history, the party that had the power to cause the shutdown (here, the Dems) knew the other party wanted to keep the government open. That was the leverage.
I went to Chicago this summer for the very first time to see the Rolling Stones. What a beautiful city. I hope to return someday and see wait wait don’t tell me.
Passing another budget wouldn't matter anyway, and passing *this* budget would only provide aid and comfort to the terrorists undermining the government.
might as well be now before the Nazis organize their Wagner style goons.
When a fascist offers you a compromise, you spit in his eyes and punch his teeth out.
No exceptions.
History tells us where that goes.
Better to fight for a clean CR and portray the shutdown as the future of America under Trump than surrender without a fight
Sometimes you need to see people try. He won't try, that's a decision that he will own. He is owning.
But out of two bad choices, not voting for the CR & making Republicans own the shutdown & any lawlessness that follows would energize the base & may wake people up who have been on the sidelines.
Allowing a shutdown would force the Republicans to regroup at least, and at best, cause them to submit to the voters they have been hiding from.
Persist! Vote NO
They claim to have a mandate - so they shouldn’t need Democrats to pass their shit. If it turns out they do need Democrats to pass their shit, they should pipe down about their nonexistent mandate and get to doing their jobs (ie: passing a bipartisan budget).
C'mon, Peter.
We didn't this like five years ago. Something like "longest US gov't shutdown in history" or something.
However the question is "do we fight or don't we fight" and the politics of the moment call for a fight
Trump is already shutting down the government, giving him legal power to do more damage while at the same time capitulating is bad politics and bad strategy
Republicans own Congress, they can own the shutdown

Surely more going on we don't know, but it looks bad for Democrats.
How long til the mid-terms? No recovery by then. "The party in power pays the price. That has always been true in a normal world", he said quietly.
Given what's happened in the last 50 days, that obviously doesn't apply here.
Aren't they simply using the Dems desire for norms and stability against them? Seems they believe it's a weakness to be exploited.
Fucking brilliant. And all of your article is tight. I wish the American public would accept it.
Elon wants the fed gov't to stop functioning. His view's not universal.
They just nuked the TSA workers' union contract last week. Those workers aren't going to keep showing up UNPAID for a month and act like everything is normal.
One kills democrat momentum in crawford’s election. The other doesn’t.
If crawford loses, the GOP believes there is no chance for anyone to win against elon’s money or as a lone wolf on any topic. They will only answer to the admin.
It’s important for the moment
It’s cowardly and legitimately could be the death knell of the Dem party.
“Fund the government or we’ll shoot the baby and by the way fund the government and we’ll shoot the baby.” is a weird argument to fold to.
See Sen Schiff on Substack for his NO vote rationale.

Lots of uncertainty on option B. But option A is certain to be bad.
Republicans are already destroying the government, and will continue to do so if this passes.
So using the excuse that not passing this gives them more power is disingenuous at best.

I'm sorry, I don't see how agreeing to this abomination is anything but a capitulation.
Fuck 'em.
If you can help your neighbours, please do, but 33 percent voted for this shit show.
