Hot tip for an impromptu living room construction site for toddlers: pumpkin seeds. Very scoopable and dumpable. Hours of fun. Hours, and hours, and hours 😬

Hot tip for a birthday cake for a small construction oriented person: get a tiny digger toy, chocolate cake with chocolate icing and build up grass, and chocolate chip & icing mounds with baubles/hundreds/thousands/whatever, and cut out a small triangular bit to put in the digger. Very cute/easy
The hardest part of parenting for me was the bit where when I came up with something to do, I knew I had to be prepared to do that for several hours or find something else inside five minutes.
My mum had a tin of seeds, lentils, etc, that she kept for my boys the play with. They used to sit at the breakfast bar and play for hours with dinky diggers and trucks.
I made the mistake of using orange lentils when my children were small. They don’t stay on the tray. Or the kitchen table. Or the floor of just one room.
Yeah. Some years ago, Ai Wei Wei filled Tate Modern’s turbine hall with porcelain sunflower seeds. Public access was restricted within a week for similar reasons. They got into clothes, escalators - everywhere.
This is like when I first let my daughter play with kinetic sand. Started off great fun but ended with us finding blue sand in nooks and crannies it had no business being in for weeks after
Bonus, they don't hurt as much as stepping on rice. Have you done a bowlful, putting small toys in the bowl so your child has to dig his hands in to find the toys--when he's old enough to not put small toys in his mouth of course, I forgot yours is still quite young.
