I love most Michael Mann movies but sometimes I get sad about him fully embracing the grainy digital aesthetic when I remember how flat out gorgeous his early movies were.
I can't believe there are versions of Thief that exist without this scene, one of my favorites in this film. "That's the Sky Chief. Ain't that Sky Chief something, huh?"
Can confirm. The Australian dvd did not have this scene. It just cuts from the end of the opening heist to the car dealership next with a quick fade-out of the score. Imagine my surprise when I watched the Criterion bluray for the first time and saw this beautiful image.
still quite possibly my favorite scene in what might be my favorite movie. that Michael Mann sat in the same booth on an hours-long date with the woman who became his wife (Summer Mann) makes it feel even more romantic.
it’s incredible how well Heat reproduces it as a foil. two older bank robbers talking about running out of time, but one wants a family and the other wants the opposite of a family.
Holy cow, these screenshots are incredible. Damnit, this is gonna be another movie that I blind buy because of you! But you haven’t steered me wrong yet!
someone pointed out that Thief is on tubi right now but that version looks a little washed out to me, and it's missing the Sky Chief scene. if you can, try watching it on the Criterion Channel instead.

I periodically watch the first 10 minutes of ALI to get fired up.
Those litterboxes don't stand a chance after I've heard some Sam Cooke!

Do you have any recommendations regarding the "Manhunter" versions?
But, first time on the big screen regardless for me - and my god, I couldn't agree more. What a beautiful film.
