If there's democrats/socialists causing problems anywhere in the world, or if they're butthurt about something, Bluesky and it's crybaby user majority are ready to report, Sir!
Political & global news was the reason I joined Twitter late in 2015, a decade later I am on BlueSky for the same reason. I am glad I left the other idiots site.
Thanks for sharing, I twittered to Network and learn more about NFTs and Blockchain, as in 2019 it was all the rage. Somehow everything evolved to politics. Im trying to move past to other more meaningful topics, to socialize with more like minded people and hopefully make some new friends.
Ok, but I still don’t understand how I’m supposed to find those breaking news, and how to follow them. I don’t see any hashtags, and which ones are trending. I think it’s an essential thing to make this work - ie the ability to quickly create topics and communities around live events.
Of the many of Fascist musk's sins, making twitter basically useless for breaking news by flooding the zone with his shit fascists, shit disinformation spreaders and Shit Russian and Chinese trolls was one that was not mentioned enough
Evil Elon Musk found a way to help monetize his disinformation to depress non fascists engagement and voting and to move people down the overtone window towards fascism:(
Hope more escape from his shithole platform towards Bluesky or others
Even people who would politically be considered "far right" are getting tired of the nonsense on 𝕏.
Several of the most effective Community Notes writers are pro-DeSantis conservatives. The only people who don't see anything wrong are the ones who drank the kool-aid.
I'm seeing some pretty atrocious CIA-sponsored propaganda on bsky. Sure, there's propaganda on all media, but it seems particularly egregious on this platform.
It's hilarious, but not too far from the truth.
They're all just mad because, on Twitter, they're bullies with no one left to bully, and they don't have anything intelligent to add to the conversation without name-calling and stale memes.
Bahahaha! Why do they care? Why do they want to be around a bunch of snowflakes? Ohhh, they can rage text to each other! To fking bad. MAGA is allowed on bluesky. They must follow TOS like everyone else. What’s the problem? Block lists? 😂
Silly question from an older genX. How do you see the breaking news without being in the app a lot? I have notifications on but are you following a specific feed? Specific individuals? Just curious.
I’m GenX. People got pissed at the media for sane washing Trump. So they stopped watching main stream media on TV. Some watch podcasts on YouTube or log on here to see what their fave political people are saying. I was on here when South Korea declared Marshal law. It hadn’t been on TV news.
So instead of getting news from the Washington Post or New York Times you are independent journalist writing articles. When you follow people from all over the country and the world , you are in a community. So when news hits it snowballs fast. 💨
To summarize.
If you want to know about breaking news on BlueSky, go to directory sites, look up journalists/news outlets and follow them. Also look for starter packs of "vetted" people to follow. Make sure you have notifications turned on so you know when shit's going down. I'm going to pin this.
I see you posted this on December 8th but today is February 1st and to the best of my knowledge we still don't have the ability for notifications. If I'm missing it please tell me.
The Discover tab is algorithmic and not chronological. The Following tab is chronological and shows only the accounts you're following - if you're following the news outlets (try BBC) and journalists, you should see timely breaking updates.
That's a great question, and you're correct. It looks like I'm following individual journalists. Here's one of many "directories" that consolidate starter packs - you can find journos there.
Sure, if you ignore all the people making wildly uneducated and unfounded claims like "Assad's plane was shot down because it disappeared from an ADS-B tracking site!"
Maybe this is an unpopular take, but I think *not* having trending topics means that people gravitate towards what they're actually interested in instead of what's popular or more likely to generate engagement, it feels a lot healthier imo
IMHO it’s the opposite. Currently I can only see what is trending in the people I’m already following (ie the Discover feed). Seems like more an echo chamber to me, than seeing what is actually trending across the board.
There is no engagement-based algorithm. It shows you things based on who you follow and that's about it. This is how things worked before ads became the sole purpose of social media.
To see more you have to subscribe to a feed designed for what you want.
Problem is, you can be interested in lots of topics. I just like to be informed in everything, hence the need people like me have for a very useful trending topics feed
America's news is so broken, it will never be repaired..traitor trump has trampled our flag and democracy till it's just a filthy old rag..next he will wipe his fat ass with it.
As a infantry veteran and a true lover of this country, that image and the terrorists attack on..OUR WHITEHOUSE.. is burned into my mind. If given the opportunity, I would beat the traitor, coward trump to a bloody pulp with my bare hands...with brass knuckles..on them..
Exactly..his cultists are as sick and low life as the traitor trump is..that why they love him..he is a sewer rat and his cult members are shit floating in his sewer. He drained the swamp to create his sewer hole.
@heesoojang.bsky.social is better than “breaking news”. She’s giving thoughtful context that’s missing from everyone racing to the publishing button, at least in regard to S Korea. I did not expect that on this app. I want more of THAT. Background context. Please!
Thank you for sharing it. I’m just one person. But to understand why people are standing up, what they’re standing up FOR…it’s more than “protesting.” Protesting in the US has become a selfie opportunity too often. Again, thank you.
What's the best way to see breaking news on this app? Old Twitter still had a "trending" page that wasn't biased so you had an idea on what was happening.
I'm so happy to see this. I'm reading breaking news here way before it hits major news sources. I know to be leery of sources in the beginning. Even ludicrous fiction spreads like wildfire sometimes.
I love how the blocking function works. It's such a small thing, but being able to completely remove the presence of trolls in my feed is a godsend. I don't need nor want to read bullshit.
They're always yapping about Hunter in total. They never stopped. It's pretty wild to see them arguing with each other about the "big bad Biden crime family" 😂😂 according to their logic, Biden already took over the U.S. and turned it into a communist country 🙃 I wish there was a cure for stupidity..
If you go to Search....there will be some new accounts you can follow, then below that its a list of FEEDS you can follow by genre....breaking news is one of them. I have it.
How?? Where is the “Breaking News”? I’m not seeing it on my feed, there’s no trending topics when I do a search. I like BlueSky but it has a lot of improvements to make to be like Twitter before it became that other thing.
Bluesky isn't really trying to be Twitter. It's trying to be something new with the familiar look and feel of something old.
There is no engagement-based algorithm to push things to you so anything you are shown is based on who you follow unless you subscribe to a customized feed like OP suggested.
They should put up a trending part where we can go through and see what other people are talking about. I’m aware they have like a little word highlighted but I’d like an actual page. Does that make sense?
Well, CORPORATE MEDIA just sucks SO BAD ... not a big shocker to me! Boardrooms & talking-heads just making bank at the EXPENSE of our blood, sweat, & tears. The public being treated like a Russian military MEAT WAVE. 🤬
Yeah, I'm just not seeing it. I don't really know what's going on. I come across random posts as I'm scrolling - and sometimes those posts are from hours ago - but that's about it. It's not helpful and certainly not passing with flying colors.
Yes, I saw that. The difference is, without some sort of trending collection, if you want to see all the Syria updates/posts, there's nowhere to get that. For now, I just type the word "Syria" in the search bar.
That just doesn't really help you for specific, individual topics. If I want to see everybody's posts about the UGA/TX game in one place, for example, there's nowhere to get that. It's not a deal breaker, it's just different and I do feel less informed.
But when you are in a hashtag you can't post. That's why I've not been using them. But I do like having a choice of feeds, that has been useful when there is a feed set up.
Sorry, I worded it badly. You can use a hashtag in a post. But if I am in a #hashtag feed (what we called a tweetalong in the other place), then I cannot post. So you either keep two windows open - or don't bother.
We're literally seeing the collapse of the Assad regime in real time. The taking of Aleppo was big news 4 days ago, now we're seeing videos of rebels overthrowing the capital, Damascus. It all happened so fast and the MSM has barely scratched what's going on.
Yeah, I've seen plenty of troll accounts getting almost no engagement because they were being mass blocked. Which avoids the mess Twitter has become with bots, trolls and grifters.
Actually that’s a good thing
It means the people who run the websites she BlueSky as a viable social media platform and are spending money to run these bot accounts
There are a lot of really good block lists out there. My feed is pretty much all blue skies! I occasionally have to block a troll or a porn bot. But not often.
There are some reeeeally good block lists that are being updated regularly that you should subscribe to. They are reposted in my TL. I haven’t had any issues with trolls or sexbots tbh.
Bluesky will will be the place where news breaks and where truth will be brought to light. Bluesky will be where rotten people will be exposed, shamed, and served justice.
Only thing is people post something about such breaking news without context about what the breaking news itself is ... at least on my TL .. and I duckduckgo on a wild hunt after.
People are under the illusion that politics is simply a difference in opinions... but that's not where we're at. If both sides wanted freedom for all and everyone to do well, then that'd be cool. But we're in a scenario where maga wants to fuck all of our lives up and dems are trying to save us all.
The Democratic Party, like its counterpart, runs rife with corporate interest, lobby money and blockading any non-two party aligned forces. It’s eccentric to say “dems are trying to save us all” I hate to say.
From a president like 45, yes they were 100% trying to save us from that is what I meant. I didn't mean all invlusively like save the day lmao I just meant we're not going to be losing rights and life made more difficult by them directly as we would/will with 45.
A party for Americans can’t be sane if their policy is dictated by unregulated corporate money, suppressing populist (Bernie) and third party (Stein) candidates, and funding the further expansion of Israel + nuclear brinksmanship.
Echo chamber only applies in my mind if everyone is equal and on opposite sides. Maga=russian dictatorship. Democrats=the U.S., ALL people being free, and have the resources they need to live life. Maga just wants us to give them all of our money. No comparison in my opinion lmao Truth above all!!!
I'm also figuring out how some of us were able to get scoops quick. I think it's currently not not as straightforward as a feed from news orgs and is instead dependent on the wider network effect from OSINT types, individuals, and independent journalists. I think I'll offer 3 posts for example
There are some feeds that can help. For example I followed the feed „over nine thousaaand!!!“ which just shows me tweets with over 9000 likes which is pretty good for news!
Did they report on the news that came out about the deplorable state of our military, or that there are 700 thousand less people employed today than there were 4 years ago? Gen X, we have to do better.
I can’t tell if you mean in the it’s full of propaganda way or in the sometimes social media spreads accurate ground perception way.
I think social media has made reporting less accurate.
Jez. I’m just trying to figure out what order a multipart post will land. I clearly have a lot to learn. (I wasn’t in the other place; so, explanations using that as a baseline don’t help me any.)

I’m seeing it multiple places.
Tail between his legs now, running scared..
What a man!! NOT!
A number of large accounts promote hoaxes and have their followers downvote Community Notes.
As outrageous lies go viral easier, they just continue spinning more hoaxes and watching the income flow.

Blue sky now 23 million and it's a far better place to be.
Once they add more people and some more features like spaces and better search options? more'll flee

Breaking news is always "reportedly". History rewrites it later.

I'm searching for news I already am aware of instead of breaking news being put into my feed.
Hoping the algorithm becomes a bit more useful soon...

Those who post are held accountable for their content and users are not throttled in mass to push certain agendas.
Days to be really done there

They are working hard to add features... The growth has sky rocketed!

Maybe the purported paid version of the service can have longer, like 60mins. 😂
Bluesky is Original Twitter 2.0.
Terrorist Trump shouldn’t be an option, but here we are.
Why deny any of this.

2. South Korea. I first heard about it from people reposting South Korean people who were seeing the news on their tv.
So in short: try to follow independent journalists.

Ya gotta know what to worry about, right?
