What actually needs to happen is that the city needs to break down barriers to national grocers like Walmart entering the city so they can run the local chains out of business. The model should be New Jersey, not the Soviet Union. It sucks that Mamdani has emerged as the top alternative to Cuomo.

NEW: Two-thirds of NYC voters support creating municipal grocery stores to bring down prices.
"The concept is imminently feasible. In fact, publicly owned grocery stores are quite common and already exist at scale—in the US military."

I still do this sometimes, because TJ's doesn't have everything.
If the city is going to own and site grocery stores, are they going to use proper formats? If so, why not just allow proper formats and let national chains own and site?
If you'd said "like Costco" then sure why not, but you picked the chain which causes the most taxpayer burden and economic devastation.
Most (all?) of the national chains are pretty bad and have been since antitrust laws loosened. A public option would have a hard time being worse.
The more diversity we have, the better. Let's not forget what Walmart does to local economies in which it enters.
The more diversity we have, the better. Let's not fall for this trap just cuz they advertise cheaper prices.
I don't even know how you would have a Walmart in NYC. They rely on the whole cheap-land + abundant parking model..
Maybe a miniature one like how Target is doing.
