I really suggest deleting twitter from your phone, or at least taking it of the home screen. Add some friction and you'll go there less. And then not at all.
First thing you need to do is get a non default profile pic & bio. If you don't people won't generally follow you and many will block outright. Then search for "starter pack {topics of interest}
Like "starter pack art" you can follow everyone with 1 click. Many/most will follow back.
Avoid following people until you've set up your account because many will not follow you back if you don't...and some may block you outright. Don't appear to be a bot.
And since we're doing some new user training, let's all remember the there is no default algorithm here. Which means
1) it's ok to post links to your website or patreon or whatever
2) You don't have to obfuscate your posts
3) Most importantly for EVERYONE...reposts are what makes this place work
Likes are fine but do nothing to surface posts in the default feed. There are feeds that use likes (like What's Hot) but if you want to help a creator or an org or issue, you -need- to repost.
I did but donβt think anyone has seen them or likes them. Sorry thatβs me.
I did not import a huge Twitter account just starting from scratch.
PS Thanks to all of you for helpful hints.
if you're new here and want to try and break the twitter habit, the best thing you can do is delete the app from your phone. Keep your account if you feel like need to but only log on via desktop.
You'll be surprised at how quickly you will just stop checking there.

It is great that AltText is being used so much here.

You can't post your own gifs but you can convert gifs to MP4 using a free tool like Handbrake and post those.
