One of my favorite types of post is a photo of the sweetest dog you have ever seen looking positively angelic captioned something like "this horrific creature is the bane of my existence and if left unchecked could well destroy civilization"

Drusilla was banned from three vets when she was young because she bites with absolutely zero warning. She’s 22 now and still does that to our dog but she’s gotten marginally better with vets.
this adorable 7lb cat has defeated no fewer than 3 vets, all of whom simply returned her to us unvaccinated because, they said, they could not extract her from her carrier without sustaining significant injury
BabyCat has failed out of 2 veterinary practices after creating "The Exorcist"-like scenes and slashing 2 vet techs who were just trying to be nice. I have never heard sounds like she made.
And oh the walk of shame, exiting under the judgy waiting room stares of those with more docile catpigs. 😣
My brother & sister in law had a cat who was ordinarily very gentle, guarded my nieces when they were babies, that sort of thing. He was banned from multiple vets in Oregon & Washington b/c he was so out of control, they had to pay for a mobile vet van including a dangerous cat surcharge 🤷🏼♂️
That's where we are at this point! And BabyCat's just the sweetest thing at home, too, even w/unfamiliar visitors. Though she's only a county-wide terror so far. I am impressed to know of their boy's multi-state campaign of terror! 🙀
ah yes, on a separate occasion I had to catch that kitten and put her in a carrier while my partner was on a video call in the same room. she screamed at the very top of her tiny lungs, and he had to reassure coworkers that there was no cat murder happening in the background 😂
I feel this viscerally! And your poor partner, having to assure the Zoom room that no cats were being murdered during their meeting... 😂 Also, I hope your skin survived that experience mostly intact.
we have! it either wasn’t enough or she was just too panicky to start with, because it made no difference at the vet but as soon as she got home she flomped off a chair 🤦♀️
also ^^ I definitely have some faint scars on both my arms haha
Have you tried wrapping her up in a towel like a burrito? I have one cat who was wild in a crate, but turned into mush when turned into a feline burrito. And he would stay weirdly calm while the vet did his thing.
haha the last time we went into the exam room to see what all the fuss was about, and indeed she makes a terrifyingly loud sound by swatting the side of her carrier, even when it was one of us approaching. so while she does enjoy being a burrito, I can’t imagine how we would burrito her at the vet.
You have to bring her in already burritoed. It takes two people, one to drive and open doors and one to hold the burrito, but apparently the swaddling calms cats down. You can get a cat bag that's more secure, too.
The late, great Jazz had to be caught in a gerry rigged device made from webbed lawn chairs and then sedated just so the vet could give him an antibiotic shot
That’s crazy! I did veterinary surgical work for 7 years. Saw many an intractable cat. You just have to grab them fast and don’t hesitate! Maybe a house call is in order? Going to the vet is so scary for some. Good luck.
Yesssss. My poor little Betty tee-tees, poos & vomits every time she has to ride in the car. Feels like I’m traumatising her. I would give treats to a vet if they’d spare us that.
I had one like that. I was the only person in the world he wouldn’t bite. He once sent a young vet to the ER for stitches. I did most of the handling at the vet after that.
Ask them for a gabapentin prescription and sedate her at home before she gets to the vet. She’ll be dozy and easier to manage, although it takes a few hours to soak in. And it comes as a liquid or a pill for dosing. (This is assuming she’s in the US, the UK are weirder about gaba.)
🫠 we did this, gave her gabapentin the night before and the morning of. behavior at vet totally unchanged (maybe it was burned off by adrenaline, or wasn’t a high enough dose?) but she did return home and promptly fall sideways out of a chair.
It only needs 3 hours max to reach full effect. I used it to drive a cat across country and also take him and his brothers to the vet, variously. It’s also worth considering an in home/mobile vet if you can afford that.
I helped care for two cats who for medical reasons had to be tranquilized. The tom was a very anxious cat. Calm for the first time in his life, he stumbled around cheerfully, exuberantly greeting his aghast sister and licking condensation off the outside of water glasses. He loved being stoned. But
his sister was an extremely serious cat of seriousness and she wasn't having this tranquilized nonsense. Gave her the pill, it began to take effect, and then by sheer force of will she shook it off and continued on her very serious way.
Actually, years before their litter mate needed tranqs. The issue with him was he liked the taste of gel capsules but not the medicine so if not watched, he'd take the capsule apart, shake out the medicine, and eat the capsule.
I haven’t used capsules. I used gaba to manage pain in an elderly boy for a while and I just got used to opening his mouth and stuff the pill down his throat, followed by a tasty churu treat to lick which helped him forget about the bad taste.
Why are you talking about my dog?
He didn't ask to be an ACD/feist cross, that's on whoever was demented enough to let such a cross loose upon the world.
I come to this space for these cat/dog/creature posts... I studiously don't follow them on other platforms, but I always have a smile on my face here :)
I can’t believe you’re not even pretending to investigate what you did to prompt his acting out. Take some responsibility, this boy is obviously innocent
Like this one…. Seriously, visiting my daughter’s family. The dog, Olive, made her unhappiness at my presence LOUD and clear. For a long time. But later……
