I’ve been able to work 30 hours a week for several years. (Spouse has the insurance.) Last employer acknowledged they got a bargain, I was more productive in 30 than most were in 40. But chose to believe it was something about me, not an actual result of a better schedule. It was the schedule.

I worked at a Honda Plant for 9 years and I could tell you some shit, man.

For instance, they can’t legally refuse to give you a bathroom break in-between the scheduled breaks… but they will do everything short of refusing, including actually refusing and just calling it something else.

One day there was a horrible snow storm and I decided it wasn’t safe to attempt going into work, so I called in a personal day. They ended up canceling the shift anyway. Only the workers who had showed up and clocked in had the day forgiven as a no-fault absence. The rest of us were penalized.

Easily half of Honda’s work force at their American plants are considered “temporary hires.” I was initially one of them. You are hired and *technically* work for an employment agency, not Honda. You work for two years and have to be hired again, and make *significantly* less per hour.

When I was first hired by the agency in the late 00’s, I initially made $12 an hour. Pay raises did occur every 6 months, but pay got capped at $18 an hour if you made it that far. The workers Honda hired directly had a starting pay of $16 an hour that capped at $25 an hour by 2 years in.

As long as half of their workforce are direct hires, it is perfectly legal for automotive companies like Honda to use employment agencies to hire workers to work at less than half the expected wages, since they are technically considered “temporary” workers.
