having been one, 20-something tech industry engineers are among the most cocksure, dangerously stupid people on god's green earth. they should exist nowhere near vital government services

and then they invented "AI" and Built Algorithms and they spoon feeds people what they want people to hear controlling their thoughts.. through Social Media and deciding the last election
Yep left a job a couple years ago after begging for help, they brought in a 20 year old who immediately wanted to rewrite a critical application for no reason other than he didn't understand it lol
I went to grad school for data science several years ago and it was so sad to see how little anyone cared about data privacy or the ethics of AI. Heard a lot of ‘well I have nothing to hide so I don’t care who can access my data’ arguments.
Of course as academics sit and discuss whether or not something is ethical, people in the real world are already doing it. We don’t seem equipped to keep up with such rapid change.
But he does regularly talk about the importance of blue collar trades and frequently takes jabs at universities. Again look up how many guys think they could beat a bear in a fight.
and it's an act. he used to sing in an opera, ffs.
mike rowe aside, the difference between just being stupid and dangerously stupid is that we don't elevate most blue collar folks to positions where they can do real harm, like we do for 20-something tech industry engineers out of their depth
I don't think you are explicitly wrong here but I do think you are confusing cocksure and ambition. Engineers in their 20's often feel they could fundamentally change the world. Blue collar guys still have ambition but it tends to be more local.
There is a segment of the software developer/designer community who believes we should be licensed like, for example, architects and civil engineers, but the pushback from people in our field against it is astonishing.
Licensed, bonded and insured, with a union and apprenticeship pipeline. I’ve been in this industry for decades and I was SUCH an asshole when I was a kid.
Yes! Maybe we’ll see a shift now that’s it’s blatantly obvious that software is dangerous in the wrong hands and the libertarian edge lords in the valley are off their rockers.
Also theyve started making their moves to depress wages and benefits and the regular layoffs probably dont help so i think people in the industry might finally be amenable to all that to combat the increasing exploitation
The lead chimp who hacked control of the US Treasury is Ed “Big Balls” Coristine. He’s 22 years old, and a fledgling sociopath. Heritage Foundation brought in hard drives and downloaded every Americans tax data, SS info, property and trust filings, basically everything.
And never forget that their prefrontal cortex which governs emotion and impulse are not yet fully developed!!! That doesn't come until 27 years of age. If ever!! Think orange turd!
I was fortunate in that I went to MIT and learned first hand that the supposed geniuses are not particularly that. Good at particular things, but not holistically. These beliefs persist because people don't work with such people directly. It'd be great if everyone had that opportunity.
They use the word 'just' all the time, and sometimes have a Dunning-Kruger level of ignorance about the things that can go wrong.
The smart ones figure out why things are as they are, and work from there. The dumb ones always want a complete rewrite, since they don't understand it.
Chesterton fences is a term that should be better known.
You should never destroy a fence, change a rule, or do away with a tradition until you understand why it's there in the first place. The principle assumes that fences have a purpose, were carefully planned, and cost time and money to erect.
"Look how clever my code is! O shrunk 20 lines of code to a single line of code 😙"
I fucking hate the "clever" developers, who can't even understand their own code after six months. They need to spanked until they become calloused, cynical old bastards (like me) who view all code with suspicion.
