We have a solidarity they could never understand. They soon will want it. If one wants to help them make sure you means test it. They’d like that right?
The view is satisfyingly hilarious from a blue state. We can afford higher prices because of higher wages, and we have state funded education/ healthcare /housing. Don't forget about clean air and water and food safety. Those low wage red states about to get a lifestyle down grade.
Yep. I went ahead and bought a new computer before the prices start getting out of control. Trying to take inventory of crucial things around the house that could be affected and getting tradesmen to tighten things up before a major blowout is unaffordable.
The people worried about the cost of food clearly have forgotten that the growing season is or will be over in most of this country and we'll have to pay for the tariffs on all the imported food.
What would this mean for someone like Musk? Seems like it could be a bit of a wet kiss for him, if it gives him edge over traditional American manufacturers.
Dunno, I see he sources lithium from China, but he’s been looking for workarounds for it, eg refining it in Texas, and with the weirdo with the chainsaw.
He says the US needs to "produce more raw materials in the ground" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Maga time to plant more lithium. Lithium likes to be planted deep, mixed with the sperm of virgins.
I recall there’s major water issues there, and his facilities are kinda eco-disasters (see Germany) so I stopped following it once I realized he was just stringing investors along. 😅
And the part this idiot does not get is that many Mexicans stopped coming into the US because they can export their avocados. I know four families that went back to work their avocado farms.
Limes and lemons. Remember when the Texas Governor had a spat with Mexico last year and he held up all trucks at the border? Limes prices went through the roof and have not yet come back down to earth. You’re going to need 🍋🍋🟩 for the 🍹that gets you through this. 😁
This is how I see it,dump is transactional and has said companies can apply for exemption . The translation is I need a little kickback, he is a mobster
I'm waiting to hear from a building supply contractor friend who is a dual citizen CA-US who moved here 20+ years ago to avid how CA "punishes success." A rational GOP "moderate" pre-MAGA.
When DeSantis did a scare in FL it cost $12B to induce workers back to pick crops. There goes OJ! Maybe RFK can do an infomercial on the benefits of road kill
Just in time for Super Bowl. But also tomatoes, lettuce, strawberries, broccoli. When those bozos get done rounding up immigrants, no one will be milking cows or butchering pigs or collecting eggs.
I don’t disagree with your point, I disagree with the assumption that most Republicans who say they voted against Harris because of grocery prices are in fact telling the truth. The vast majority voted against her because 1) she’s a woman & 2) she’s a minority. Grocery prices just sounds better.
If only the U.S. had an industry whose job it was to inform, educate & warn Americans & was dedicated to protecting democracy.
It sure would've been handy to have such an industry in 2024. Instead, what we've got are overpaid circus addicts who #sanewashed a sexual predator/con man/dictator-wannabe.
That’s okay! We’ll just plant avocados in the U.S.! And then we’ll have them picked and packed by … er … by those legal Americans that have been dying to work on farms doing backbreaking work for little money! It’s foolproof!
Jeeeeeeez, I just got into avocados. Now it's gonna be a billion dollars for one? I'm a millennial, this is an injustice. An avocado is my birthright. 😮💨
'Never' is a pretty strong word here. Bessent already wrote the op-ed on Fox to ease Wall St. into it. Lighthizer literally wrote the book on tariff policy and trade. Biden extending the 1st Trump tariffs via exec. order is the precedent. He'll also both houses if he wants to do it Congressionally.
Please reread what I wrote. He’ll never impose “blanket” tariffs on Mexico and Canada and Biden only carried forward certain “targeted” tariffs on Chinese imports
What I'm saying WRT Biden is 'the process' is in place for him to do what he wants. What is the reasoning behind him NOT imposing 'blanket' tariffs? That's something that his economic theorists actually want, potential recession be damned.
At what point do we start believing the things he says himself? We have to take it as fact because the tactic is overwhelm us with outrageous shit until we're numb
It's funny (not funny) that my first visceral response to the tariff announcement was "Oh no, not the avocados!" And I don't even eat them that often but I do like some guacamole once in a while.
But with a 25% tariff on about half the beef imports and the tariff markup the corps will skim on ALL imported and domestic beef, it's LUPFHD that will be taking their hamburgers away.
The lower income uneducated and illiterate MAGATS in the poorest of the red states are about to find out the hardest way. The leopard is about to eat their stupid faces.
This! Also...I froze the last big bag of avos I bought and you can run a frozen one under some warm !tap water for a few seconds and the peel slips right off...mash, season and enjoy!
I absolutely adore this!! I have never had Guacamole 🥑 Never but i want to make this dish that calls for it but Idk where to even start! I have till Jan 11th to figure this out!! I’m not joking so O could use some knowledge & info!! Thanks!💯💙
💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙🇺🇸💙
You must have a huge walk in refrigerator to store avocado for the next four years or more. I hope they still taste good after such frozen long periods. You’re about to be very rich selling frozen avocado.
If you voted out the incumbent because you thought housing prices were too high, got more bad news from you.
We import $105B in cement/lime/minerals and $28B in lumber/paper from Canada. We also *already* tariff that lumber to death
Expect construction costs to go through the roof (so to speak)
People don't grasp that it's an integrated economy so even "domestic" supply chains cross North American borders. "Trade" not in the bilateral way people think about it.
You guys talk like these folks think about policy and consequences. They don’t they are voting out of hate: they voted out of hate. That’s where we’re at. A bunch of morons —half the country — voted for hate.
NAFTA was replaced in 2020 by the USMCA, under Trump. I’m trying to figure out how many tariffs exist currently on goods imported from Mexico/Canada. I believe Mexico recently set tariffs on 500+ products from the US.
The funniest/saddest thing of all was seeing all the LGBTQ folk supporting HAMAS. Next thing on HAMAS’ agenda after destroying Israel is exterminating all LGBTQ folk. Seriously, speaking as a lefty, the Loony Left are brain dead and are handing power to the fascists.
Fucking idiot doesn’t realise that Trump and Netanyahu want to eradicate Palestinians as an
entity. Critical thinking has disappeared from the idiot far left in America too it seems.
6,885,000 NT from Canada
4,180,000 NT from Mexico
China is a major supplier of insulation,
stucco,siding,roofing materials,
drywall,railing & steel studs
That assumes that the construction industry can find workers to actually build because Trump will have rounded many of these workers up and deported them.
Question for you, Catherine: are there any mass political actions that regular consumers can take (e.g., general strikes, month-long spending moratoria, etc.) that you think might move/force businesses in this country to oppose these tariffs w/o damaging the economy fatally?
So they’re squelching all of the pro-housing/YIMBY laws, but also making wood, concrete, and steel more expensive. The question is whether right-wing voters are capable of correctly assigning blame
Add in no bodies to finish the concrete, frame the house, lay the brick, tape and float the sheetrock, paint everything-inside and out. Totally forget flipping a house, anywhere. You think DR Horton, Lennar, or Chip and Joanna do their own work?
Landscaping and garden centers. Their grow farms are cheap labor and though some have green cards, it may still affect the business if their staff are pulled away.
If you voted out the incumbent because you thought gas prices were too high, I have yet more bad news for you.
The petroleum industry is well-integrated across North America. In the American Midwest, most refined petroleum products come from Canada https://bsky.app/profile/gasbuddyguy.bsky.social/post/3lbsse7tqcc2e
Republican electeds in my state have spent considerable energy convincing their base that the only things that come into the US from Mexico are browned-skinned immigrants & fentanyl; the only thing from Canada is maple syrup; and there is only one kind of oil and it is under federal land.
How ignorant do you have to be to not understand that tariffs are nothing more than added cost on goods you purchase. When the Walmart says they will absorb what they can, I can only laugh. What’s more is the cult will blame it on, I don’t know-Obama. How do we deal with that level of stupidity.
This makes me laugh, our crazy maple MAGA premier is a huge trump fan-we (taxpayers)are paying to send her to the inauguration. She ‘doesn’t know’ if Alberta oil will get an exemption. Doesn’t look like it. They are all so dumb 🤦🏻♀️
Texas too! Mexico #1 trading partner with Port of Houston. Mexico has sent oil to Houston since the port was first dredged and opened in 1914. Tariffs will make gas prices soar here!
If we spend our time whining about tariffs we'll continue to lose. People want a secure border. Trump will frame every issue in the context of open borders. And it will be an effective strategy. The economy does not work for 70% of the country and they see open borders as one part of the problem.
What if MSM had reported non-stop on THIS for a week, combined with all the crimes Trump is walking free on apparently? Instead NPR chooses to do a piece normalizing Leonard Leo?!!
The auto industry is also very integrated with parts going back and forth between each country many times before a car is assembled in the U.S. Cumulative tariff could add up very fast.
Here is a quick ChatGPT question and answer on the topic.
This clown STILL believes that these tariffs are going to be paid by Mexico and Canada!?!?! He hasn't yet figured out it's American businesses that are going to be paying this. Oh dear gods I really shouldn't laugh.
The Koch Brothers, now singular, have been mega conservative donors for decades. They were behind Citizens United. Republican leaders are likely to be very upset.
He tried this before. Trudeau said Canada will also increase their tariffs. After an unusual number of meetings, calls, he backed down.
He’s like the newly minted junior supervisor that does not know of what he speaks.
*shrug* For nearly a decade we've tried everything to explain to people what voting for him means. And I'm not talking about the 30% that's his base, as they're gone. No I'm referring to the idiots that voted for lower egg prices over literally everything else.
Far too few understand US refining is (IIRC) built for heavy crude, while the oil produced in the US is largely light crude. As a result we export our light to countries that can use it, and we import heavy for domestic use. Placing a tariff on that import activity will make fuel cost much more.
At the same time, we should expect reciprocal tariffs, making it harder to export our light crude.
I suppose there could be an argument all of this could bring more economic activity back to the US, but that'll take time and cause a lot of pain and burden on the backs of ordinary people.
Wait till everyone up and down the west coast and in Texas and Montana and Idaho get the power bills in the middle of winter. They all offset their power grids with hydro from British Columbia during peak demand.
Same goes for LNG for heat
the silliest part of all this is the expectation that economic conditions translate to political outcomes. only perceptions matter. if stories about those price increases are effective in blaming foreign countries, corporations, democrats, the high prices benefit trump and republicans.
Won't he just declare the fentanyl crisis solved and take credit for forcing our neighbors to act? It's not as though being untethered to reality has held him back at any point.
Trump's botched Covid policy caused the first round of inflation, plus his massive deficits, it took 4 years to bring inflation under control back to target range....now Trump threatens to re ignite inflation with massive Tariffs and threats to our largest trading partners.
@therealbrent.bsky.social Can’t wait for Car Juice to go back up and Florida’s still going to vote 3 points further to the right or whatever in 2026!! 👍
Patrick De Haan (@gasbuddyguy.bsky.social) adds: “Also, I'd guesstimate the impact would be billions of dollars to U.S. motorists on a yearly basis. Perhaps $6-$10 billion per year.”
Does Canada have a viable export market for this oil given its location, sulfur content? This might be the rare case where much of the incidence falls on the exporter, no?
If you voted out the incumbent because you thought he’d help the US auto industry, I have even more bad news from you. As trade expert @kclausing.bsky.social observes, auto parts cross NA borders many times in the process of making a car/truck. This will wreak havoc on the US auto sector
Alberta can’t leave. That’s the great joke none of those “wexit” shitheads talk about. Treaties with indigenous peoples are with the Canadian government, not Alberta, so if they tried to leave, all those reservations would still be Canadian land. Also national parks. And Alberta won’t have passports
I’m beginning to be quite sure that the plan is to crash the U.S. economy. He’s putting it all right out in the open. The plan is to destroy, cause chaos, so he can be the “one to fix it,” by consolidating power to himself.
Of course this tweet and so many others are there to set the stage for his declaration of a 'national emergency', closure of the borders, and well, you already know where we go from there.
propane and natural gas too. Enbridge Line #5, which originates in Canada, supplies most of the propane used for heating in MAGA saturated upper Michigan.
Someone should tell Dumpf it isn't Canada or Mexico's border that has the problem, and that REPUBLICANS haven't bothered to "settle this long simmering problem" despite having control of Congress multiple times including in his FIRST "administration".
Maybe he should talk to them.
This seems like a perfect time to tell everyone you can boil or roast squash, from acorn to summer, to cut your avocado consumption whilst making guacamole.
I would also recommend gnocchi, a dumpling that uses mashed potatoes! Some squash would be a bit to watery for all that, but I could see sweet potato gnocchi as a great addition to a butternut squash soup!

Let them wear it.
How many trucks?
Only displays by total EV, not units. Not sure if that information is available through OEC or not

Always true.
Maga time to plant more lithium. Lithium likes to be planted deep, mixed with the sperm of virgins.
Tesla is the most corporate welfare based car company in the free world. It made sense 5 - 10 years ago. Not anymore.
For example, 90% of our avocados come from Mexico. Guac is REALLY gonna cost extra
https://www.cnbc.com/2024/08/17/why-90percent-of-the-us-avocado-supply-comes-from-mexico-.html
As I mentioned on Nov 8, "but have you seen the price of eggs?" is going to be the "but the trains ran on time" of our era.
Leopards Eating People’s Faces party would immediately increase leopard imports. Next few years are gonna suck.
so fuck off; the track record of the wapo re trump sucks despite daniel dale

He’ll never implement a blanket 25% tariff on all goods from Mexico and Canada.
I'm deeply distressed about never being able to ever eat like a normal person again.
Tomatoes just don’t grow as well here (except in southern CA—so, Mexico).
So what happens when that source gets too costly?
Enjoy that $120 pizza!
And that $200 Olive Garden pasta plate.

So even higher
But with a 25% tariff on about half the beef imports and the tariff markup the corps will skim on ALL imported and domestic beef, it's LUPFHD that will be taking their hamburgers away.
High earners will be able to afford plenty of avocados 🥑🥑🥑🥑
Because when we go high they go even lower. Because they just don't freaking care about people.
We tried. We're finished trying.
Knives out.
Period.
No more playing nice.

So... "How much could an avocado cost, Michael? $10?"

Then blame THEM if it doesn't work out.
Classic Trump.
The guy is a Lazy Bastard.
Why did Canada have to be dragged into this, for heaven sakes
Canadian oil sells at a discount to other crude oils because of its quality, transportation costs, and limited market access.
It's cheaper that even Domestic (US) oil.
I don't like it. But it works as a bit.
He’s like the newly minted junior supervisor that does not know of what he speaks.
Let them feel pain. Maybe it'll stick

Good job Michigan, Wisconsin, and for that matter Ohio, Iowa, Kansas, and Nebraska.
Same goes for LNG for heat
They still think the Dept of Energy oversees domestic oil production.
I'm going to be sick 🤢
Maybe he should talk to them.
