I’ve noticed a massive drop in the use of alt text on images here over the month.
This is something people calmly as consistently ask for absolutely constantly, and a couple of seconds per image post seems a good tradeoff for including more people.
Click on ‘alt’, and add a short description.

We’ve built a feature like this for websites at work, generating and publishing alt texts in bulk.
I try to use it, especially as I post pictures of poems and quotes and it's wearisome to keep adding the same description.
And for memes it uses up less of word count.
It is best practice, and the right thing to do, and I applaud you for raising it.

Toggle the "require alt text when posting" setting.
Maybe the app people can do something there. Or some more labeler potential from a home developer 🤷
Also I believe the text is searchable?
Settings - accessibility - require alt text for photos.
point me in the direction as to how it is done - checked settings - dont see - pardon my ignorance
I appreciate a calm and polite ask, which is so different from the boiling pot I just crawled out of.

what did you think it was for?
For sightless people, there’s a lot of ‘OMG LOOK AT THIS’ online, and there need not be.
Not great.
Go to Settings then Acessibility, and toggle "Require alt text before posting" on.
You can go to your settings and change it so you are prompted to add it. Helped me a lot!
Mine are mostly short and roughly descriptive. I won’t manage with it otherwise, but I do think it’s better than nothing at all. Like, it makes sense of the post, and I think that’s the point of it.
People, please do your alt text right, then we won't be reduced to this! Which means including all the text in the image, and don't shove hyperlinks in there.
Additionally, the most recent DIG album has been keeping me company whilst working lately - so I thank you guys profusely for this
