My late Polish uncle, who was 12 at the time the Nazi’s came into his village, told me that if you tried to help a Jewish person while they were rounding them up, you would be thrown into the line with them. So you are right.
I'm sure that the Nazi SS said something similar to people helping Jews hide from genocide.
If you do what you know is wrong because power has told you it is right, you ARE what's wrong with the world.
Translation: Help us terrorize this country. Turn on your neighbors or anyone you suspect is their target. Act against those with whom we work and live because this dude wants to fill up internment camps in TX or something like that. Horror is the goal--a scene of dystopian cruelty and horror.
Can we at least just acknowledge that regardless of whether we think free migration ought to be considered a human right, deportations are in no way morally comparable to either fugitive slave recapture or the Holocaust?
I am aware of the original plan to deport Jews to Madagascar, but the "pretext" was unrelated to the legitimate grievance of illegal immigration, was not based on any actual pre-existing law any Jew ever broke, and was preceded by open pogroms. There is still a gulf between these events.
There is no "legitimate grievance" vis-à-vis illegal immigration. Open borders are the default condition of a free society. When governments start making arrangements to keep people out, they're also ensuring some can't leave.
The incoming administration is having two unelected bureaucrats (both of whom benefitted from lax immigration enforcement) discuss which agencies to eliminate in order to tackle government waste, fraud and abuse. If they were serious about this task, they would start here
Apparently he doesn't give two shits about any other crimes. His only crime he cares about is illegal immigrants and unfortunately the majority of the ones he's going to affect are the ones that are actually legal.
I don't want everything to be a communist party, kremlin or mullah decree crime because I don't agree. They say I'm going to disagree, because it's against the law - what they want to do. They plan on courts changing the Constitution as they violate it.
People learning in real time whether or not they actually would have helped slaves escaping the south or Jews escape the Nazis, like they always thought they would (because they’re good people!)
The supreme court case referenced came out of the prosecutions and the state courts intervening to grant habeas petitions. When SCOTUS tried to take it up, the Wisconsin court refused to even send the transcripts of the case to DC.
I had no idea about that bit of Wisconsin history. I've been wondering about a state supreme court defying an increasingly reactionary national one. It's empowering to learn that it already happened in the 19th century and the sky didn't fall!
The GOP is big on adding a clause to a law, saying if it’s against your religion, then you don’t have to obey this law. So what about Matthew when Jesus says we have to welcome in strangers or we’re damned to Hell? Probably the guy in the tape hates Christians. Probably he’s a a godless Communist.
