Most likely she had a Hitler Youth knife or something like that that had been 'de-nazified' with the markings removed, there are a lot of those out there, and she wanted re-nazified ("restored" as it were) and had another example she was showing him of the original design on it.

Nothing particular to the location, just that if you're in this sort of business where you're dealing with historical memorabilia and the like, it's a fairly well-known thing that some people have a no-nazi-stuff policy and others... well, mostly are just nazis themselves and cater to that market.

I also grew up near there, we used to go to the zoo just up the road. And true, it's the kind of thing you'll get more of in a former sundown town sort of place. But it's definitely a thing that happens everywhere, it's like an industry-wide known thing about "that kind" of collectors and dealers.
