I liked the book better.

I thought the final gift was appropriate - Gruber falls to his death just as the Christmas bells start ringing (the sound was obscured by the overblown soundtrack orchestration in the movie.)

I’ve always maintained it is not a Christmas movie by the following standard: if you removed all Christmas elements, does the movie still make sense? If yes, not a Christmas movie. Simply a movie that takes place at Christmas. Miracle on 34th St, for example, doesn’t make sense w/o Christmas.

I’m ducking the question of what, exactly, constitutes a Christmas movie. Does it need specific story beats, events, or character arcs? Or does it just mean taking place around Christmas? And if so, how much emphasis?

That I didn't know. Some of it takes place around Christmas, including one marvelous scene with H & T having dinner in her apt dressed in bathrobes when her fiancé Gig Young shows up. Perhaps I need to improve my case for it next year by timing the Christmas content as a percentage of movie! 😉

I'm a suspension-of-disbelief sort of movie watcher. Die Hard needs the building to be empty except for Holly and her coworkers, there's some indication early that it's also a business success celebration, and the movie never draws attention to it—such as by making it a plot point—so fine by me.
