The Yankees alone are blocking automated balls and strikes because MLB is run by the Yankees and the Yankees are fully aware they benefit far more than any other team from umpire biased ball and strike calls.
Gary Carter wrote about how catchers would punish umpires for bad calls. Things like deliberately not catching a high fastball, standing up leaning back to catch the ump under the chin with your head, moving a foot back when squatting so you could spike their foot when you stand. Games within games!
Everyone of those pitches touched the strike zone, some were on the black or a little up but they're all strikes. And you don't need that superimposed box to see it.
I am SO not a sports fan. I don't know from baseball, except what I remember about softball from the fields I played on in school. But I was never any damned good at it, which may be why I never noticed the sheer artistry that is revealed by adding this 'strike box' to the video. Bravo.
They either need to use the automated strike zone or get rid of the on screen strike zone. It gets exposed every game how tough it is to ump home plate and the difference in ability to do it.
Does that square in front of the batters box drive anyone else crazy, I've been watching baseball in my whole life I never had a problem figuring out the strike zone. Why do we have to dumb everything down, or maybe it's just me.
Well Adrienne, not everyone is as high speed as you. Believe it or not, people have things going on in their lives that prevent them from knowing everything about baseball. So, to help those people out, they made the strike zone appear on TV. Hope this helps!
I've never watched a game of baseball I wasn't forced to. I still don't need visual aids to figure it out. Maybe what "people have going on in their lives" is a disinterest in baseball?
Why not connect the strike zone video signal to an audio bleep & blurp that only the umpire can hear? Give the guy some help. Bleep = strike, blurp is a ball.
Been wondering how it is that umpiring seems to have gotten worse and worse over the past five or six seasons or so and then during the off-season, I always tell myself I'm being too hard on the umpires because umpiring is hard. And then this guy comes along.
That Astros shit irked me. I'm a Sox fan, and the fact that they brought Cora back? I haven't paid attention to them since. He was a big part of that, and that was a horrible message to rehire him.
I always thought umps botching calls was part of the tradition. On the other hand, I fully get wanting a game that follows the rules with integrity. I'm fully torn if umps should be ousted 🤷♂️
And this is a great example of why MLB should go with full ABS instead of the challenge system. No way a team can call this many challenges in a game (or should be the ones with the responsibility to). The HP umpire can continue to make other calls but receives ABS info for pitches and relays them.
Bring on the robots. It won't even cost the umpires jobs because they'll still need someone back there. It's just be a very accurate machine deciding balls and strikes.
The cupping on the high pitches and the glove movements of the catcher are what’s making these pitches look so egregious. Get rid of the goddamn box or get rid of the umps.
Couple of those were high and were tolerable. A couple weren’t. Mixing in borderline balls with the couple that were misses sends the message that the whole game was this bad. Do better.
While umpires do make mistakes, the box on the TV isn't very accurate. If you watch the same game on two channels, the boxes are often significantly different.
Also, the TV boxes are "uncalibrated" meaning drawn for an average-heigh player. Post-processed data is available tailored to each batter.
Remember what happened to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl they lost because of them visiting Trump. The LA Dodgers went to the White House on Monday before they played the Nationals and they have lost the first two games.
Karma has struck again!!!! I think the Dodgers have lost 3 straight
Nope. Umpires blowind calls and calling balls strikes is a time honored occurance at all levels of the game. Besides Umps are some of the most colorful personalities on the field!
A lot of people are going to lose their minds when the balls and strikes don’t line up with the little box on your video feed and I wonder who you’ll blame then?
He's consistent, though. A few were on the line so, to the naked eye, I can understand the calls.
All this proves is how difficult the job is, in fairness
I’m ready for technology to call balls and strikes! MLB umpires are not only inconsistent, they are thin-skinned, unprofessional, and at times antagonistic. They hold personal grudges that ruin the game because a player hurt their feelings or was just too emotional for their liking!🤦🏻♂️

You're supposed to call 97% of balls and 88% of strikes correct, not the other way around
Everyone is going to say "tradition."
The same magical force that brings us racism, sexism, and climate change!
Neato!

I do feel comfortable calling strikes behind the plate. Some of those are too close to second-guess based on the video.

Looking unfit to ump a T-ball game is a somewhat different matter.

It does seem like the strike zone shrunk this year though.
Why? Why would you possibly PREFER fallible humans, when we have machines that can now accomplish the task with LITERAL PERFECTION?
A human looking over the catcher's shoulder was never going to be good at making close calls. It is a job for cameras and computers.
Bats are technology, too.
Don't you want to keep it ALL HUMAN?
Go to the computer.
Je dis ça, je dis rien ! 🤣
C’mon man.
