Thanks for this nugget of history. I'm familiar with Capa's work in the Spanish Civil War (and that of his incredible partner, Gerda Taro, the first woman combat photographer) but wasn't aware he had visited USSR. Can only imagine the pics he would have gotten with full access. Slava Ukraini.

I didn't know about the Ukrainian famine in 1946-1947. The Soviets should have listened to Steinbeck about American farmers. While the Great Depression and the Dustbowl were very harmful, people were not dying in famine conditions, and things actually had improved.

Your last posts have included the name “Shevchenko”. My Dad sang in the Shevchenko Male chorus in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the 50s and 60s. This is him at Massey Hall, Toronto, at a commemorative concert for Shevchenko. I cherish this memory and miss his voice. And am a proud Ukrainian Canadian!
