A male Red-winged Blackbird showing his bright shoulder feathers as he flies low over the marsh. I saw a flock of about ten female Red-winged Blackbirds further down the path; these birds haven't paired up yet here. The males might still be figuring out territories.

Love the distinctive call of the Red-winged Blackbird. It's as much a sure sign of spring as the return of the Robins (... which isn't really a very good sign of spring 😉).
I love redwing blackbirds. They're abundant here in Indiana.
For anyone who doesn't have it already, I highly recommend the free Merlin bird app. It will give you identifications through visual cues or even birdcalls!
Starlings claim smaller areas, making blackbirds find new areas, but space is running out. No food or breeding grounds.
