An autistic, nonverbal teenage boy who was shot repeatedly by Idaho police from the other side of a chain link fence while he was holding a knife died Saturday after being removed from life support, his family said.

Those officers have probably had the common sense and critical thinking trained out of them. They treat every incident as a high risk situation... instead of backing up, taking a bit more time to access and coming up with a plan.
On the other side of a chain-link fence? What could he have done to them? You don't even have to answer that question because everyone knows it wasn't a question that they were in danger. I would say they were scared, but he was Hispanic, right?
Legitimately, the only reason to call the police for any kind of help is if you want someone to die. They *might not* kill someone, but that's the dice you're rolling.
When I saw the videos of it happening, I was beyond disgusted and angry.. now I'm sick and infuriated.
We need to end qualified immunity and start holding trigger happy police accountable. There were so so many non-lethal options to choose from, and NONE of them were even thought of! Disgusting
There has to be better training for police in these types of situations. I don’t know what the answer is, but the police need to know that these vulnerable individuals are in the public that they are protecting.
Police in the southeast Idaho city of Pocatello responded to a 911 call reporting that an apparently intoxicated man with a knife was chasing someone in a yard - His family members had been trying to get the large kitchen knife away from him.
Shot nine times ! This is just heartbreaking maybe instead of studying the whole vaccinations causing Autism they should be studying why these people use excessive force in these situations!
No, hard disagree. None of them are "good" when they cover for each other, lie, fabricate evidence and murder us. None of them are good. They are armed thugs running the streets with impunity.
I admire the way you approached a guy who was ideologically allied with you and started a fight over his rhetoric, alienating yourself for no reason at all
There was a fence and distance!! There was no need to shoot at all with guns. What about a taser gun instead!? And they should have litsen to family members when it comes to a disabled person.
Police racket. Armed thugs posing as public protectors, high school bullies given lethal force and conditioned to think that everything is the enemy. What good soldiers they make, what good pawns. We're all left to live in fear of the things that are supposed to keep us safe.
And I am autistic myself and it's kinda a bummer when people focus on the people who have to deal with the autistic people and not the autistic folks who are shot by cops or "mercy" killed by caregivers
We need to stop drawing our police pool from ex-military, we need to train officers so they are solidly comfortable with effective communication, family dynamics, working with people of diverse abilities. I had a client killed by being tasered by police officers - he was mentally ill.
Those cops are clearly more cognitively challenged than the boy. What fucking losers!
But I'm sure they will all get commendations for their brave execution of this poor kid who needed their help.
I taught Use of Force curriculum for several years. There are zero elements present in this situation that justify the Cops actions. Zero. The behavior is impulsive adrenaline fueled authoritarian behavior. I grieve for this loss
That's a waste of resources. Force them to carry insurance. Remove qualified immunity. Have all lawsuits payout from police pensions. Minimum 4 years of school and training before they can carry a gun. Bodycams that CANNOT be turned off.
Prevention is never a waste of resources, and I agree with the rest of your suggestions. But again, preventing drugging cops from being on the beat saves lives.
We're supposed to be protecting people & children like this. We're supposed to be their safe place, their haven, the place to go to when they're scared and confused. When they're not sure of right from wrong, when they have feelings that need to be sorted. We're f*cking failing a very simple course.
I say we take that fear... and start giving it to those officers. Time to bring police immunity into the common debate. Why is it this family has to make the choice of whether to call it in, if whats on the other side is the execution squad. We should abolish the ability to unload on civies
My understanding is that the family didn’t call. He also had cerebral palsy so someone with no knowledge of the situation assumed he was drunk and made the call!
Fuck those police officers. They always fire first without knowing the full story. Their lives were not in danger. All 4 of them fired as opposed to using their tasers? They committed 1st degree manslaughter.🤬
Cops have been trained that everyone is out to get them, most of that training is after they leave police academies, they seem to have little interest in de-escalation.
Some states have something called the comm card where the individual registers as being unable to communicate verbally. They can show police the card in a situation. Police can look them up in the registry. Of course it only works if they aren't gun happy first, sadly.
As a woman with autism who struggles with communication, this is so scary. The police have caused me so many issues with my trafficking and exploitation case, and I can’t even imagine what this family is going through.
Cops who respond to calls like this shouldn't carry weapons. Leave them in the car. In England, cops are not routinely armed. If the suspect is not armed with a gun, there is no reason to respond with armed officers. Better yet, send someone who isn't a cop to this 911 call.
Imagine being so fuckin scared of everything you'd rather murder this kid than take two steps back. I built a lot of counter mobility obstacles in my day. A 4 foot vertical fence is more than enough. This kid should still be alive
I don't understand why police are only shoot to kill. If they would just shoot people in the legs they would go down and they wouldn't have people running away. If they have someone with a knife like this kid just shoot him in the legs he'll go down then he's no threat to anyone. Shoot the legs!
One of the biggest fears of so many parents of young adults with various disabilities, including me. This tragic unacceptable crap happens way too often. There needs to be a nationwide push for better police training.
Police stopped wearing blue decades ago. At the time they said they were switching to black uniforms to be more intimidating to gangs but today they would probably not admit that they are deliberately trying to scare the public.
Everyone in America knows who you’re talking about when you say “the boys in blue”. For example, sheriffs generally wear uniforms in shades of brown, but we all know their true colors. They’re part of the gang, too, regardless of the uniform color, and are probably some of the worst of the worst.
I don’t suggest you read up on LAPD, I don’t suggest you look into their affiliation with gangs. I also don’t want to assume that other police forces are doing the exact same thing.
And nevermind the fact that the Fraternal Order of Police backed Trump, along with the private prison industry. Certainly don't read anything about white supremacy & Christian supremacy in law enforcement or the military.
Find out who these police shooters & snipers are and don’t give them medical aid or allow them to shop etc in your area. Ostracise them. But get their names in a list.
“Nearly 90% of autistic people experience some form of sensory hypersensitivity (over-responsiveness) or hyposensitivity (under-responsiveness). This can include touch, smell, and hearing.”
In other words he might not have reacted the way police expected because the noise could have overwhelmed him
Shameful of these officers who decide to shoot instead of de-escalate and then go from there. I have a nephew who is nonverbal and on the spectrum and I fear for him every day.
When a cop is involved in an incident like this, instead of 'administrative leave' or whatever, they should be made to attend firearm safety and conflict deescalation trainings and if they can't pass a rigorous test for both, they should never walk the street with a gun again for any jurisdiction
The police un-alived him because they could. They would not be held accountable. The lawsuit by the parents will paid by the city and not out of those officers' pensions.
Those cops are cowards. There was a fence. He had a knife not a gun. No attempt to deescalate. Then one starts shooting they all start shooting!!! Poor recruiting and training.
Hope the family sues, this desth was completely avoidable and they used unnecessary force.
They had a fence between them for goodness sake! And idk if they really needed to take action why not a taser?! Appalling and disgraceful! 💔🤬
What the actual fuck? My nephew is non-verbal autistic and at times gets frustrated trying to communicate. He will throw a full on tantrum. This young man probably didn’t understand the knife was looked at as a weapon. Police shoot way too soon way too often. 😡💔
The family was there and trying to convince him to give it to them. Cops show up and he’s lying on the ground. He gets up and walks towards them. He is ON THE OTHER SIDE OF A FENCE, no firearm, just the knife and they shoot him repeatedly with the family screaming at them to stop!! Unconscionable!!
Yes, they were right there while all of this was happening. Apparently the young man also had cerebral palsy and had difficulty walking so someone saw him and told the dispatcher he was “drunk.” The cops made no attempt to engage with the family or de-escalate. Just showed up and started shooting.
I understand their fear. I mean, there was about a one in a gazillion billion chance the kid would quantum tunnel through the fence, followed by the one in a billion gazillion chance the atoms in the knife would spontaneously rearrange into a loaded gun. What person wouldn't be afraid? /s
Oooh, tough guys in ID? You have guns, and a kid has a knife assholes. Where were the mental health ppl? Oh, that's right, you canned all of them. I hate ID.
See you in court, Pocatello PD.
Civil suit settlement should be paid from the department’s retirement fund. Maybe that will encourage better police training and deescalation tactics.
this is a tragedy that could have easily been avoided if we paid the police more and required more and better training. We have to get rid of this mentality that every problem the police face requires deadly force
I can assure you it is not lack of training. It's lack of consequences.
Is anybody doing research on ways to take people into custody without murdering them? I ask this because when I was a kid in the 1960s I watched "Wild Kingdom," and they captured large animals without killing them.

I know that statistically most of them are good, but I’ve seen enough bad ones that I don’t trust any.
I asked why he hit me. He claimed he didn’t. I showed him blood in my mouth
As a crowd formed, he put me in the car and said, “Try that faggot shit again and I’ll beat you.”
It was investigated by the police board. No witness saw his fist make contact because he lunged into my car so they let him go.

Sucking cop dick, allowing pastors to rape children?
You may not understand how that got us to this point, but some do.

“Police snipers were stationed on a nearby rooftop during the protest, though no violence was reported.”
How many will it take before we finally throw off the chains and rise up?
At 19 I became a statistic when a cop pulled me over for going slow (deer).
Fuck this.
But I'm sure they will all get commendations for their brave execution of this poor kid who needed their help.

Those cops should be sent to El Salvador…pronto!

Shades of Tamir Rice, et al.
"He had undergone several surgeries, with doctors removing nine bullets and amputating his leg."
Probably fired 10x that no.
If I'm scared, I'll shoot you.
So wrong. Tragic.
Oh... America.
Town is less than 60K people.
Protocols they said.
In other words he might not have reacted the way police expected because the noise could have overwhelmed him
The neighbor that called the police should be held liable.
14 damned seconds.
NO DE-ESCALATION
They murdered him.

This is so fucking gross.

Cop mentality is a SCOURGE on this country.
Yuh—I said it.
