And I'm so happy! A lot of the disney winners are deserving but it felt like they won for the wrong reasons (also likely how spiderverse won as well). I'm glad they are now taking animation seriously and international too.

Now if they only start taking horror more seriously it would be great

It does seem like after the infamous 2022 statement, there was some kind of shake-up in how they evaluate their options.

This isn't to say the wins for films owned by Disney are undeserved. Movies like Inside Out and Zootopia more than earned them. But it's nice to have variety.

It was more about how they previously decided winners that bothered me. I loved the films they choose but they choose for the wrong reasons. It does feel like though they are taking the selection process more seriously

Plus, considering the state of western animation right now has become more reliant on being contemporary and IP-driven, it might have help prompt Academy voters to seek out other movies that aren't in the mainstream market.

This isn't a matter of "yay Disney is finally losing" because the award is really about the filmmakers. It's more heartening to see animation be presented more than just Hollywood.

I won't mind if another Disney-owned film wins in the future, but I hope this momentum can be maintained.

The Academy membership has also gotten younger and more international over the past decade, as reflected by winners in other categories, too, and non-English language films getting nominated for Best Picture every year instead of sporadically. It evens the playing field a bit.

Agreed. And even though we know WDAS and Pixar will most likely win another Oscar in the future (and I also wouldn't be unhappy at all if that does happen, the films are still good and I have no point in complaining these days), it's always nice to see animation getting appreciated in general.
