You wouldn't need to store water in a cup because nearly every residence in the world has access to running water on demand.

People cannot get a soft drink in their homes on demand (unless they have Soda Stream I guess), so they buy bottles and cans instead of going to a shop with a fountain?

Arguably, CO2 containers are a carbon negative/neutral solution as well. This depends on how much is containerised and not resold.

It's pretty simple, we're a blight.

If you want the solution, it's to drink only water from a stone or wood vessel, and fresh fruit juice and compost the remnants.

Soft drinks aren't green unless you sip Onsen.

I think it might also have something to do with water being such an easily accessible resource and so there seems to be less of a point in bottling it and selling it when you can just get it from your tap. I think all of these statements are true to some degree.
