The issue is that the asynchronous aspect of interview norms makes it impossible to have an impact. Trump doesn’t play by norms in fact his “charm” to his voters is that he shatters them. Correcting him only reinforces Trump’s “renegade” appearance to his base.

So journalists (should) play by rules where words matter. If he says racist, degrading, idiotic stuff they should call it out. Much of Trump’s base, however, doesn’t care about specific words, it’s only about what they feel he meant to say if “you squint your ears just so”
