Don Bacon is too far up Drump’s ass to do anything. Talk is cheap. I live in his district and have never voted for him. They gerrymandered so much in this state and that’s how he continues to get reelected.
I live in Colorado now, but used to live in his district, never voted for him either. I just checked out his X and he actually posted and reposted about Putin and Ukraine. I was definitely surprised he’s not falling in line on this issue.
Appeasement was a huge mistake but the intention was to avoid another terrible war. 🇬🇧 lost 880,000 in WW1. 🇫🇷 lost approx 1.4m. 🇺🇸 lost 53000 in comparison.
Chamberlain is ridiculed for being naive but no one ever accused him of collaboration.
Trump isn't appeasing Putin. He is collaborating.
So I’m probably going to get crap for this, but I think it looks like Schumer and Jeffries are looking like the chamberlains of this century in our country. The life is being sucked out of us.
Chamberlain was trying to buy time. Years of underinvestment in the military had left Britain (and other European countries) extremely vulnerable. Churchill had been warning of the danger for years.
Just the complete lack of self awareness is mind boggling. Does he not know the official position of his president and party is to secede sections of Ukraine to Russia?
Not fair to Chamberlain. He acted in good faith and withdrew his support for appeasing Hitler after the invasion. He was not a Hitler puppet. He never said Czechoslovakia started the war! Trump, in contrast, is totally dominated by Putin.
It's really too bad his paternal grandfather didn't just stay in Germany but no, he had to skip out on military service without informing the government.
Then when he wanted to go back to Germany because his wife was homesick, Germany said "No".
If you all think Russia has any plans for taking Europe or any Country, you are sadly mistaken. He doesn’t want to fight NATO, think logically. This Fearmongering is out of control. Do better research and quit listening to warmongering politicians provoking fear within you.
Former allies of the US would be wise to offload all their US bonds and trigger a regime change or civil war in the US, then these incessant threats to our sovereign territory and safety would cease.
Maybe do a bargain with China and give them incentive to offhand a bulk of their US-bonds as well.
Rep Don Bacon has zero integrity spouting this...and hello, it's not 1938. Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia is still the aggressor. Trump has now made America Russia's ally. Happy Americans?
So when do we queue in the Hamilton cast to start singing:
Cause when push comes to shove
I will kill your friends and family to remind you of my love
Da-da-da, dat-da, dat, da-da-da, da-ya-da
Da-da, dat, dat, da-ya-da
Call it a vision or a nightmare, but last night I got image of the US invading Canada, Russia invading Europe, and Dump publicly claiming fealty to Putin.
Afghanistan...someone on TV was noting comments by Greg Norman and Phil Mickelson re: SA and Khashoggi wrt LIV Golf - how is that paying (yes paying not playing) out with Trump.
SA clearly bankrolled 9/11 but...we lost blood and treasure over the Taliban hiding bin Laden? Release the files!
This IS exactly what Putin will do. Cool his heels. Wait. Rebuild his shit army. Assemble again and re-invade later.
Trump was a draft dodger in the past and certainly does not "know more than his Generals " as he once claimed.
And/or invade other neighboring countries. It's all about power. Russia is by far the largest country in the world. It's massive. It spans 2 continents. They do not need any more land.
But the funny thing it is not as cohesive as they portray their country to be. There are powder kegs through out it and it will only take a spark to ignite them one by one.
Muscovy is small in comparison to their Empire they call Russia. Just like small England and its once vast empire.
You coalesce the British empire into the way the Muscovy Empire is laid out then call England it to would have appeared just as big too.
Like the saying that is floating about "Make Russia Small Again".
It's not about land it's about Power and Natural resources. It's why Drump wants Canada to gloat and steal all of our natural resources he says the US doesn't need. He's following his hero's playbook.
It’s not enough for people of good conscience to passively post. There have to be hearings. There have to be speeches. There have to be holds put on funding and agenda items. Congress has to use its power or in this case retake its power. Trump is bringing about an existential crisis for our allies.
🤣oh you mean the compliant "let me roll over and you can tickle my tummy" Congress, the self-serving cowards who know they'll be re-elected because magaturds are to f'in stupid so anything different...forgive me if I don't hold my breath waiting to see anything happen
British person here. For decades, Neville Chamberlain has been regarded as a poor historical footnote. He showed what happens when Fascists are inadvertently emboldened instead of punched. He resigned in 1940. The rest, as the world knows, is Churchill.
To the contrary, we are not Neville Champerlain. We're Vyacheslav Molotov believing that we can negotiate into a lucrative deal with Hitler. Russia will not invade America, but when we turn our backs on Europe, we turn our backs on one of the sources of our own power.
When you put it so - not an appeaser of Evil, but a principal agent of it - it's even more depressing.
Something must be done.
Anything I suggest re: 'what' may be seen as foreign interference. That said, he's by-passing provisions claimed to limit 'Tyranny'. Know a good Constitutional Lawyer?
I agree. And he inadvertently gave the Germans the breathing room to build up arms etc.
It can be seen retrospectively as poor judgement, but at the time the desire to avoid further war at all costs cannot be underestimated.
No, quite the opposite. Although sacrificing Czechoslovakia was shameful, it gave Britain time to build up its airforce. If Britain had declared war in 1938 it would have lost. Even so, by the outbreak of war they only had 400 Hawker Hurricanes.
We are LGBTQ+ Ugandans living in Gorom Refugee Camp, South Sudan. After fleeing persecution, we face extreme hardship with no food, medication, or basic needs. Our resettlement to the U.S. has been delayed due to anti-LGBTQ+ policies under Trump’s leadership, leaving us in danger. https://gofund.me/bc71607a
You don’t need to go that far back in history. Trump did this with Afghanistan. His admin excluded Afghanistan government from negotiations with the Taliban.
Chamberlain played for time, and he got it. He knew war couldn't be avoided, but he also knew that by delaying the onset of hostilities, he could prepare and improve British odds. Basically, he took one for the team.
It should also be remembered that Chamberlain was very anti-Nazi. He did his best to re-arm Britain and prepare for war. There is not the slightest suggestion that he had any Nazi sympathies, and no-one ever accused him of colluding with Hitler. Compare and contrast to our mango Shitler.
Except he's got it wrong.
Chamberlain was a good man who could simply not understand the weight of the evil he was looking at. He wasn't a coward, and he certainly wasn't a fascist.
With Trump, a better comparison would be Mussolini. Maybe Franco. Maybe Stalin (before he switched sides).
Abandoning Ukraine now, after they've fought with bravery and honor for three years to hold onto their sovereignty, is a disgrace. Trump will be known as the Chamberlain of the United States, except that he's doing it for personal reasons. No words. 💔
Chamberlain thought he was ensuring the peace. Trump and Musk KNOW they're enabling aggression - and they really don't give a fuck. Putin's offered them a cut of the profits, so **** the 'peasantry.' Let 'em eat cake.
The comparisons to Chamberlain are often inappropriate in modern times. He wanted to be a peacemaker.
Europe was seething, as empires were falling and states becoming balkanized.
As you say, just no comparison to the malice and greed behind Trump etc.
Anti-Russian propaganda? We grew up with anti-Soviet FACTS. We're not ok with this. But the generation that includes our kids didn't learn world history very well. That bunch is more likely to believe Trump's idiocy.
Fair point, I shouldn't have used the word propaganda. The boomers I was raised by are 100% trumpers. But I'm in rural America and I don't know how to put it in words, but most of us (not me) have always believed red is the only way.
Unfortunately you're right. Many Boomers are trumpies & believe any bullsht he/mushie spew. But I saw a chart recently (can't find it now) that shows older people are much less likely to support Russia (v Ukr) compared to 40-64 yr olds.Boomers were evenly divided in voting for Harris v Trump in Nov.
I should probably look at the data more. Maybe the numbers can help us figure out where we went wrong. Thank you for open dialog without hate. This has been unexpected and refreshing
Chamberlain takes all the blame for the appeasement at Munich. However, Edouard Daladier, the French leader was also present & a co-signatory. Often forgotten & never mentioned for his actions alongside Chamberlain. History should try to be accurate, because without that it becomes misleading.
Wish @lisamurkowski.bsky.social was half as truthful, half as brave, half as patriotic, but no, she is not at all. She should be leading anti-trump protests, but if you're a flea, you're a flea.
To complete the parallel with what our President is doing, Chamberlain would have had to take as his price for the betrayal 50% of Czechoslovakia’s natural resources.
It's a failing of Empires thinking they have leverage over everything. They tend to overestimate their reach, and it's often their downfall.
America is on a precipace, but turning it around needs a major shift, not just the removal of Trump.
I'm not caling for revolution, but that's what they do.
You will benefit oh so greatly from reading On Tyranny by Timothy Snyder - a short and brilliant book on how Hitler took power in 53 days. Here's a free PDF. http://drmalik.atw.hu/RM/snyder.pdf
"5 Days In London (May 1940)", John Lukacs.
Churchill, after his meeting with Cabinet members, "I was sure that every minister was ready to be killed quite soon, and have all his family and possessions destroyed, rather than give in." (to Hitler) Aristocrats, men with $, men with morals and honor.
What was the alternative? Not trying and starting a war right away? Or maybe the option for keeping peace is ALWAYS valid as it has no drawbacks to try?
No - but he would've attacked anyway .. what about all the times, where such actions did in fact avoid a war? In the case you mentioned there was basically no downside for not trying. If there is an option to avoid a war it's your duty to take it.
I would agree with you if it was anyone but Putin, he won’t stop with Ukraine, he wants all Eastern European countries, great imperial Russia again, so no in this case there is no deal and if is war , so be it
Do we know - what would you suggest to do? Declaring war? Sending you children fighting them? Or maybe try to find diplomatic solutions? We never tried, because we denied diplomacy .. so maybe we should find out.
I don't see much difference between ru or us "imperialism"
I’m in the middle of watching the historical Hitler series on Netflix and am baffled by how many leaders thought giving him an inch would appease him. He’ll always take the mile.
Read Timothy Snyder's Substack from last week. He details what happened in 1938 and how it could have been different had the Czechs not capitulated. He compares that decision to the current situation in Ukraine.
Europe should be ONE country, with ONE government, ONE army, composed of beautiful regions called France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Germany, UK, Poland, etc. We have no choice: WE MUST UNITE
The only difference is that, unlike Czechoslovakia, Ukraine chose to fight back and has made it clear it intends to continue to do so unless they have a peace treaty they find acceptable.
and the Czechs have taken a lot of shit for it ever since. Much smaller country than Ukraine, and also had no help in sight from the U.S. or the rest of Europe
This is what Trump is attempting to do to Ukraine. He doesn’t just want to destroy the US but also wants to steal every other country’s resources and minerals. Can’t anyone stop him
Yes. We see it all too clearly here in Europe. "History doesn't repeat itself but it does rhyme" There is still time to stop this but ordinary Americans and statesmen & women need to fight from within. It's not too late yet. Act now.
In 1939 the Soviets and Nazis secretly divided up Poland into their spheres of influence then invaded the country. About 20% of the population of Poland died in WWII.
Da ultime notizie viste sembra che Trump dia la colpa della guerra in Ucraina a Zelensky , vuole 50%di terre rare sembra un film già visto su spartizione Polonia....
E poi? Magari fare MacDonald in mezzo ad Auschwitz?
Mah.....
Piango per America in mano a Trump e Musk
They *refused* to stand up to Hitler. His own people said after the war that if Britain and France had said no, they would have overthrown Hitler in a heartbeat. The officer corps in the Wehrmacht *hated* him but were terrified after the Night of Long Knives.
Leaving aside for the moment the reliability of ex post facto testimony from surviving officers, I believe that was true during the remilitarization of the Rhineland in 1936. Once Hitler had successfully abrogated the other restraints on German rearmament and annexed Austria, the moment was past.
Sorry, we're well past Chamberlain now!
The Saudi meeting is Molotov-Ribbentrop 2.0
The U.S. is now ALLIED with the brutal fascist dictator Putin and is carving up territory between them
The British with the French and America divided the Middle East during the 1st world War. Without King Faisel being informed. The Middle East has had stability since.
Potus trumpie should have someone read him history of the 20th Century.

Why do you think they want to take us over? So the oligarchs can create one country. Imagine us, Russia and the USA together. That’s what I believe is happening here.
Every GOP member of Congress who doesn’t disown Delusional Donnie’s statements & actions on Ukraine should be labelled “a Chamberlain look alike”, & publicly humiliated!
Neville chamberlain was a pompous fool and it took a stammering King and a cigar smoking grumpy old man to sort Hitler out and restore the status quo! Oh and a fiery Queen who Hitler was afraid of!
That’s what we need a fierce Queen who scared the shite outta Felonia and Elon!! 🤔

Definitely not Great Britain's finest hour, but anyone who knows anything about history should be highlighting what happens when you appease someone like Putin. Yes, Trump will wave a piece of paper and say "Peace in our time" again and we'll all be at war before long once more. Learn from history!!

He focused most of his talk on Ukraine. He was clearly frustrated by many of his party members.
I’m glad he posted this.

Besides, we already know that Trump is working for Putin.
Chamberlain was a good man who could simply not understand the weight of the evil he was looking at. He wasn't a coward, and he certainly wasn't a fascist.

Conservative Prime Minister Chamberlain.

To make things worse, Putin knows history. He is strategic. Being former KGB, he knows exactly how to manipulate Donald.

I'm not caling for revolution, but that's what they do.
Drumpf is a spineless coward, traitor, and a weak capitulator to Putin.
His lies, rewriting of history, and stupidity are epic.
What we are allowing him to do to Ukraine is an outrage, and we will be hated for our complicity.

Churchill, after his meeting with Cabinet members, "I was sure that every minister was ready to be killed quite soon, and have all his family and possessions destroyed, rather than give in." (to Hitler) Aristocrats, men with $, men with morals and honor.
Now the question is which dictator: PUTIN or RUMP.
Remember Mussolini was admired by Hitler before WWII
I don't see much difference between ru or us "imperialism"
And, speak to those who do t study it!
History repeats.
The Russian military was supposed to be able to take on all of NATO, they have struggled with fighting Ukraine for three years.
