There’s graduation fees for caps & gowns, proms, homecoming & God knows what else. My daughter goes to Chicago selective high school for the arts that’s partly funded by Chicago Schools & partly run by a foundation. There’s lots of free perks but parents often have to make up the shortfall.

And unisex bathrooms. The performances alone would send them over the edge. We moved here 5 yrs ago from a super MAGA area of Florida & I am thankful every day. She got a full ride to Wisconsin-Madison’s undergrad Sociology Dep. She’d have never had this opportunity in Florida.

It’s not as cynical as it seems. The student council will often be given a budget for the school sponsored dances for the year.

Typically a homecoming, prom and maybe 1 other less formal dance. The student council will then budget and fund raise to elevate the type of dance they have. They can also charge for tickets. So it’s a learning experience for some.

How expensive are the tickets usually? We have an entry fee like 3 to 5 euros and then people pay for their drinks, students organizing usually sell consumption for a extra profit to fund the school trips of the last year of secondary school.
We pay for outfit but usually it's a suit so reusable

All depends on the school. My daughter’s prom was $60 a ticket and held at Disneyland Hotel. They can be quite formal affairs at luxury resorts or something done in the school gym.

In my day, it was only the well-off kids who went to prom. They were the ones who could afford the dresses or tuxedo, the corsage, etc. Plus, you had to have a date. I learned then that life isn't fair & that being poor & not so popular meant you didn't always get what you wanted. Life lesson.
