When will the politicians stand up and say Brexit has been an unmitigated disaster. Until we admit the problem exists then we can never find a solution.
Absolutely. The old way is gone 2 days ago. Time to put our differences aside and face these fuckers as strong Europeans from whatever direction they come. We’ll worry about the petty stuff after.
Unfortunately, there’ll never be a European Army. Very few nations in the EU ( nor the UK ) would hand over command of part , never mind all of their armed forces to a “ non national “.They’re finding it more and more difficult to agree on the most basic thing at the moment with the rise of populism.
After the last 48hrs I wonder if the ilk are now panicking into how we can we sell this shit to the 75% who does believe in democracy 🤔 the independent papers ie: @bylinetimes.bsky.social need to keep up with what they are doing @hardeepmatharu.bsky.social 👏
oh they will and our electoral system enables that, so for example in germany AfD may get 20% but no power, in Austria FPO have a massive vote but no vote, Austria is looking bad BTW ...
It’s really weird. Although he follows US politics with a microscope, UK fairly closely, Austria not closely at all.
Although I did talk to him about it recently; and we both agreed that because he’s fairly wealthy he’s actually quite insulated from the worst of RW ideology.
I think that’s true
FPÖ got just under 28%, not a massive vote: all other parties had 'never with Kickl' front & centre of their manifestos and 72% voted for those others. Austria not looking bad bc a potentially disastrous Oban-wannabe gvt just been prevented
True about the last opinion poll but I was talking about the last election.. Parties can't have a say weighted on Sunday's opinion polls.. Austria just avoided a massive disaster (because the ÖVP didn't fold in negotiations) and most people think and hope the FPÖ vote share will shrink again
Brexit was the testing ground for what has happened in the US. They succeeded in getting the UK to vote against their own interests by spreading a pack of lies, and now we are isolated. They have done the same in the USA. Look up Peter Thiel and his associations.
The brexiter ideologues will be making excuses for Putin and Trump even as they step out to the Brexit Arms carpark, glass of Stella in hand, and admire the pretty mushroom cloud in the distance, over London.
I really hope starmer steps up and doesnt hide behind treasury - just be bold for once. Im getting bored on this weak show - we wont win again hard right with this uninspiring leadership - keep waiting for the big change but getting left dissatisfied. Farage would gleefully let DOGE loose on HMG
Also funny how Farage and Co have gone quiet as their US friends have gone full facist selling European (and UK) security down the river. Their pro Brexit (screw Europe) advocacy now looks even more stupid than it was at the time!
The interesting thing is that nearly everything ‘Project Fear’ has come to pass.
Nothing that Farage & Brexiteers predicted has happened:
Immigration up.
Sovereignty unaffected.
Prices up.
No hospitals built etc etc
Starmer should get the Russia Report released in full. Show the apathetic UK public exactly what's been going on.
Broadcast on primetime TV John Sweeney's excellent documentary on Johnson at Lebedev's party villa in Italy.
Leave no doubt in people's minds what the tories have enabled.
No doubt it will show the conservatives were at the least complicit in Russia subversion of our democracy or at the most identify complicit individuals..eh Boris. He won't, it would reduce their votes more and give reform a better chance at the next election
I seem to remember that Cummings and Carrie Johnston were movers and shakers in Conservative Fiends of Russia. I believe Cummings spent number of years living in Russia.
if Trump has a plan, it may be something like this:
1 call NATO countries "enemies of free speech"
2 USA quits NATO
3 jail/crush any opponents
4 USA becomes de facto tyranny
5 form alliance with Russia against "woke" democracies
6 steal Greenland & Canada
7 steal Gaza, Panama, etc
Putins fingerprints all over Brexit was dismissed by Leavers time and again. It was always key to why it was such a bad idea. And now they're shocked by Reform's support for Putin, when they fought the Brexit campaign at their side.
I find it even more amazing that “sensible people” with big platforms find time to talk about DEI or WOKE and ignore the obvious danger we are facing. Mentioning no names Piers Morgan.
Traitor Trump has done what Putin has wanted for years. Now is the time for all nations within NATO to quickly form an alliance that treats the US as the pariah it has chosen to become. Maybe in the future America will regain respect but how? The USA now uses treaties & agreements like toilet paper.
On the matter of security I truly wish we didn't have to say we were right but in reality we were right and said so at the time. Sadly we were trumped by that ethereal bs named sovereignty
Remember the heady days when ‘Turkey joining the EU’ and ‘We’ll be forced to join an EU army’ were used to frighten people into voting to isolate ourselves and make ourselves infinitely more vulnerable. How Putin must have laughed at our idiocy.
What extraordianry times those were, regular marches in London. Those moments the Lammy, Sinson et al out on the stage promising we'd get our 2nd vote, only to cave within a week. I was heart-broken.
I have to say, Brexit looks particularly moronic this weekend.
I appreciate the EU does not have a military role at the moment, but frankly, the closer we can get to our European democratic allies the better . You have to be a democracy to be part of the EU that must be strictly upheld by the EU.
The EU will undoubtedly prefer to follow the French, truly independent model rather than the UK which is heavily dependent on US technology and goodwill.
Indeed. And then look at the plastic patriots, pseudo sovereignty absolutist & Putin fanboys who pushed Brexit, and it all makes perfect sense. What a mess. Should be strong grounds for Starmer to push a strong EU agenda, but will he..?🤔
Starmer won't.
He's made it very clear : question settled, no return to any of EU instances in his life time.
What may happen though is UK getting closer to EU for certain things like defense.
No. Been so dissappinted with him so far. A thumping majority yet completely obsessed with countering Reform instead of actually governing and doing what needs to be done.
Then, please, why does he not sort the BBC, tackle GB and get newspapers - by law, if necessary, to report objectively or mark their writing as sn opinion?
You can't touch the freedom of the press in a democracy, as absurd as that is. But I fully agree with you. News outlets should have disclaimers forced on them, like cigarettes.
I follow it pretty closely. There's been plenty of good things. I should clarify, I'm dissapointed in his approach to the EU and his utter refusal to acknowledge that Brexit was a huge disaster. It's literally the reason for the £20bn black hole in government finances.
I don’t think he could go ‘all out Europe’ in the first few months.
It’s becoming clear that the US is no longer a credible ally and the so called special relationship is defunct.
There will be a resetting of our relationship with Europe as we now must move closer for our own defence.
I m at home, stunned, listening to LBC where Iain Dale is talking *positively* with a brexiteer about a European army...🤪🤣😳 One of the main arguments to leave, now embraced. Insane.
The devil looks after his own. Putin must be splitting his sides laughing now.
I still can't get over why people thought voting for Cameron over Gordon Brown was a better option, everything that has happened since is completely abysmal.
I hear Rachel Reeves is enemy number 1 😫
I’ve said before I think we’re getting what we deserved. Unless you were politically engaged and understood the value of EU membership you were ripe for being lied to and manipulated. And we’re now beginning to see the value of what we lost. On a positive note we’ll never need this argument again!
It annoys me that I can't put 'european' in the ethnicity part of a questionnaire. That's what I feel after all. If the cornish can have cornish, I want 'european'.
UK is part of Europe.
A significant number of us have DNA from other European countries in our ancestry.
Greedy liars, fear mongers, racists drove Brexit.
An unmitigated disaster for everyone apart from wealthy tax dodgers & gamblers.
If nothing else good happens now, perhaps UK will be Farage free
Indeed. Unsurprisingly, he broke his promise to exit Britain if Brexit failed.
And I think he has property in Belgium, maybe Germany too.
But perhaps the orange felon and his billionaire handler will offer him refuge in Mar a Lago?
I spoke to many of the 'leave gang' at the time as I'd never heard anything about an EU army but they thought it was really important.
By far the biggest complaint was replacing our army with one run by the EU. In retrospect it sounds very much like Daily Mail or targeted Facebook ads I didn't see.
The JEF was founded in 2018 and was a follower as a pan-European army of Eurocorps, which was founded in 1992.
Why do Brits always want (claim) to be "leaders", want to lecture the world about their greatness and wag their finger to the RoW? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurocorps
A country that can’t even lead itself and yet still we must understand that when they join the EU (without the EU having a say) they will be there to lead us.
No one wants the UK to lead anything. They still don’t understand that the EU is all about cooperation, something which the
& maybe not such a bad thing, as our Foreign Policy has all too often solely been an addendum to theirs.
If we could but Scandi-style our foreign policy in co-operation with others & while we're at it, how about scandi-styling our economy, trade & travel for the benefit of all especially the young
Can I add appeasement? There's been far far too much of that lately. JD Vance, on an official trip to Germany, wouldn't meet the democratically elected leader of Germany. He chose to meet with the neo-Nazi group instead. If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck it's a duck. This has to be stopped.
Why was he even on sky? A far right party (tiny) pushing the Russian agenda. Well done @skynewsrss.bsky.social this was pandering to the right. How much money was shifting hands? He lies and lies and lies.
Oh this twonk again. Does he think Trump will come to our aid if Russia makes a move to take over Europe? That's what Trump is enabling. Obama would stand by our side. Nigel. USA won't protect us, you do not want to join with Europe for protection. Are you telling new Lord Haw-Haw?
Ring any bells? Trump/Chamberlain meets Putin/Hitler to carve up Ukraine/Czechoslovakia without letting them have a say. He will walk away as he always does. Let's not pretend he's anything other than a dangerous fool. He bankrupted a casino. When does Nigel realise that he's a patsy? Not invited.
Halcyon days James. If only we didn’t rely so very heavily on the US military industrial complex for all that military hardware which needs so much maintenance. The rockets and missiles that need US supplied targeting data.
A union of European countries is vital to peace in Europe.
UK, or was it Cameron, absolutely failed EU when deciding it wanted "sovereignty".
#RejoinEU
Project Fear was the stupidly awful campaign that won the Unionists no friends and almost lost them the campaign against Scottish independence in 2014.
Much the same people took entirely the wrong lessons from that and went on to use the same name and tactics and properly lose the EU referendum.
It was perfected against us separatists in Scotland. The full force State and propaganda was brought down on us, and still continues.
Tell a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.
I think we’re reaching an incredibly pivotal moment in world history. Zelensky is getting it right and the EU needs to listen up. Is this Starmer’s moment?
Comments
Looks the case...OK, I was in that Cold War episode, I'll go in again...at my age nowt to lose
Less than 10 years ago.
Just get it done . sigh an agreement that we can't leave for 300 year.
Putin is pissed
Trump used a big words "that is bad "
UK get richer
Win win
Sorry guys 😞

I think that’s true
With Trump being so unreliable, Vance and Musk siding up to the extreme right, and the Russia threat; it would be an easy win.
And there is an added bonus of a boost to the UK economy.
America is a hostile nation to the free world.

It's sold as "patriot act 2.0"
And you know, what happened with 1.0
I'm pretty sure, we don't even know 20% of what's going on..
Most things are just to distract...
We've already learned this in his first term...
And shouldn't have forgotten this.
Mindreader, by David J Lieberman....🙏🙏
Same in the US
It's all about bullying and driving truth off social media platforms
Our 'game is' to circumvent the abusers, expose them and never surrender to their abuses
Noone can trust the US to keep its word. Look at the Paris agreement, the Iran agreement, the Gaza agreement, America's commitment to NATO.
Global warming will make us toast…no, no that came out wrong!
I mean, do the toast-ing.
Err… no, scratch that too.
