The UK is apparently a very rich country. Yet people sometimes have to decide whether to spend their money on food or medication.
We do have to account for inflation though.

My surgery sends the request direct from the GP to the pharmacy.

E.g. GP prescribes specific make of a medicine for reasons of excipient intolerance, pharmacy will only supply cheapest unless patient pays extra, ignoring what GP wrote.
A huge health inequality, especially when some morbidities require life-long medication and are more prevalent in areas of multiple deprivation.
