hey, stop using populism as a euphemism for naziism! it not only sanitizes naziism, but implies that most people like it! that's wrong! shut the fuck up!

Danger: underestimating the severity of the Trump Threat to democracy and the safety of Americans makes the impending overthrow possible. The Media is camouflaging the danger, minimizing the present and ongoing threat🚩 by gaslighting #RadicslizedRepublicans are Enablers
Yup this!!! Unfortunately a lot of folks on the left start calling you a Nazi if you dare utter an opinion that they disagree with! So much for looking for bipartisan solutions!
Populism doesn't imply popularity. It means gathering up enough people who view themselves as commoners and convincing them to overthrow the perceived elites.
Not one of these notions has to actually be reality. They haven't correctly identified the elites, nor the commoners.
Historians use these types of terms to group together similar movements in history with the intent of using the top-down understanding to predict and understand political movements in the future.
I have never heard one describe populism as explicitly good or left-wing. Nearly always the opposite. Populism is seen as having the same inherent problems as direct democracy. The meanest and richest people often become the loudest voices, leading to a cult of personality which eclipses reason.
That said, it's not an inherently bad term either. Bernie 2016 was very populist. The American, Soviet, and French Revolutions were all at least partially populist. MLK, Malcolm X, Ralph Nader, JFK, and RFK all led populist movements.
It's important to be able to see common threads in good and bad.
i understand what you're saying, but my question wasn't in an academic context, it was in a "there are literal nazis rising to power right now" context. euphamistic language is a mistake here, is my point
They are rhetorically populist sometimes the movement is not populist. It is not actually implementing the policies that these people want to see. That's why it's so easy to point out things trump lied about he was going to do
Like a majority of the country does not support mass deportations
This is a serious question: what distinguishes the two? It seems to me that the only difference is that populism requires "elections" even if they're clearly unfair (e.g., the main media sources are all controlled by one party) whereas fascism doesn't. I have done a fair amount of reading about
Except that if you know your LATAM history then you know that "populism" was the term used for the South American dictatorships. It's an important term because of the Juntas that emerged. The lessons of history aren't exclusively European. Call them Nazis if you like, but do so with open eyes.
You're ignoring the fact that right-wing populism exists. That's what people are referring to when we say "populist movement". It's not a new definition either.
populism is definitionally not right wing. this is just some bullshit that high profile libs started doing in 2016 to justify horseshoe theory, and it helps the nazis
No, it isn't. And, no, it doesn't. Literally either side can see themselves as having a populist movement in opposition to an elite. It's just that the right's populism is far more dangerous.
The origins of populism are pure leftist, and multi racial, beginning post- civil war in the reconstruction south among black and white sharecroppers. The klan started as a response to what they saw as dangerous solidarity building among the working class via populism, to preserve yt pwr structure.
yeah you could go through all those mental gymnastics to justify making false equivalence with the left OR and hear me out, you could just call a nazi a fucking nazi.
It started before 2016, but it was basically a deployment of a euphemism and whitewashed inherently racist/xenophobic actors/movements which they didn’t want to acknowledge as fascist despite those actors/movements literally being rooted in just that.
Trump absolutely claims to represent ordinary people and a lot of voters believe that too. Same with being anti-establishment. It's a type of populism, though a lot of fascist movements in Europe are more populist in terms of policies.
A lot of populist movements have been bad, historically.
I saw a clip of that Entin guy from CNN the other day where he was gushing about DT and saying he has +6 favorability where as he was -17 or something at the start of his last term. If you watch any MSM they are acting like he’s Reagan. The brainwashing is happening, and it’s hard to stay sane
This is the SECOND time today I've read something that you've posted that makes PROFOUND SENSE, & now I'm just going to have follow you. Dammit. I'm breaking my follow quota of the day for you, @jediofgallifrey.bsky.social. I hope you appreciate it!
That guy doing the nazi salute, arguably, the most powerful person on the planet that believes in eugenics and advocates for breeding programs is actually not a nazi, stop being divisive!!
Nazis were fascists. Maga, and especially trump, are fascists. The proud boys are fascists. Calling them nazis, especially watching what he and they are doing, is as accurate as calling nazis fascists.
“Populism” has always been an overused term, and used in a way that clearly exonerates neoliberal status quo bullshit.
Like, come on, these people aren’t bad because they do things that seem popular. And the left isn’t “just as bad” because they also criticize things but from a different direction
The masses gravitate to fascism, this is real. You can observe it everywhere and across history. Only proletarian organization can put a stop to it, make people realize socialism is better
It's also causing really weird takes on RedNote from ppl who don't have great command of English, that Donald Trump is Marx's bestie, and if that's happening on RedNote, it's probably happening elsewhere. If people think Trump is Robert Reich on main because DeepL told them to, it's Joever.
For those who missed the civics lesson or failed the vocab quiz: Populism means the system exists for the benefit of the populace, aka the common people. Sometimes a party may coopt a word that is not the its true mission, for marketing purposes to dupe supporters.
Populism is a range of political stances that emphasize the idea of the common 'people' and often position this group in opposition to a perceived 'elite'. (Wikipedia)
Populism, political program or movement that champions, or claims to champion, the common person, usually by favourable contrast with a real or perceived elite or establishment. (Brittanica)
I prefer reactionary nihilism. But I call it the Dumb Ass revolution because so many of his followers are ignorant of history and so much more. But nihilism was an element of Nazism for sure.
populism as spouted by the media only ever refers to rw nut jobs and therefore populism/nazis/fascists all the same thing. See also libertarians who confusingly hate liberals despite the route word. There’s no lw populism and for those at the back lw is opposite to fascism.
Naziism gaslights you into believing it is populist because a huge portion of fascism is setting up large government bodies dedicated to publishing propaganda
Our media situation is, in my opinion, the single biggest issue. It wont matter what policies the left has or what good work we are trying to do if everyone is being lied to by MSM and SM and propagandized with Nazism. It’s a dire situation and I’m not sure what the plan is to address it.
This is why I’m so passionate about Bluesky, Skylight and Flashes. I’m also supportive of rich ppl like mark cuban buying up media space. I get that he’s a billionaire but we have to compete on that level and most of us don’t have the money to do so. It is what it is.
You: not seeing clearly. Read my posts. Parallels 'tween Trump & Hitler too compelling. Hitler populist movement Nazi: Trump populist movement MAGA. Disturbing signs & parallels there if seeing. Hear his words & actions. Camps being built to concentrate victims. Don't say after, you did not know.
In the US, populism was really more of what you'd call a left/progressive movement of the late 1800's. It was farmers organizing against the predations of Gilded Age oligarchs.
To them anything that threatens the liberal order is equally bad for them & thus they're the same thing. Until the shit hits the fan & they side with fascists to maintain their influence that is.
I am starting to get the feeling that the majority of the right and some centrists are calling MAGA populists instead of Nazis/fascists because they’re in the awkward position of agreeing with many of Trump’s policies
This 👆 ppl who aren’t seeing the similarities haven’t studied the history. Btw I think the OP meant that what we are seeing is nazism but that maga is trying to sane wash it as “populism” but it’s because they are dumb and don’t know that history is in fact repeating itself and they are the nazis.
It's not a synonym, but you are incredibly naive to not understand what right-wing populism is, the Nazis called themselves Nationalist Socialists, they beckoned everyone to join. Populism is simply a tactic, so yes, Nazism is a form of populism, and people fall for it again and again.
Nazism is something to be abhored and making it sound kinder or more palatable to even bring it *close* to being a topic worthy of debating is fucking disgusting.
Doubt it. Nobody can save us. The only way forward is letting people find out the hard way and hopefully it will lead to a coalition to undo all of this.
Why make things up? Far-right populism has been defined and studied since at least the 1940s, with increasing attention since the 90s.
I’m sorry if you want to refer to yourself as a populist and find RW populism distasteful, but I for one think Nazism is bad regardless of how it appeals to people
Modi was brought up in an explicitly Nazi-inspired movement in India.
Populism is typically a bottom-up movement. Xenophobic/racist/tribalistic movements which are top-down and hierarchical from the start, reflect establishment power dynamics and come to power via support of the rich & privileged.
All those guys are Nazis. What are you on about? Modi's deportation tac is straight from Hitler, occupied Palestininian Apartheid is basically Nazi Germany, Bolsonaro... okay I can't even think of a way he is not just a Nazi. Do you think the anti-semitism has to be vocal or something?
Yes, antisemitism doesn't only need to be vocal, it is a core feature of the ideology. We don't need to use Nazi for every fascist, because we already have a word: fascist.
I remember a conversation where my dad, a hardcore Fox News addict, was talking with my brother in law, a hardcore Leftist, about populism and my brother in law immediately said oh you mean nationalism
Trumps GOP:
The party for law and order????
The party for family values????
The party pardoning cop killers???
The party kissing trumps ass???
The party for billionaires????
The party for fuck veterans?
The party who allows abortions for themselves????
The party deporting working people????
I argue that populism may be an aspect of nazism and fascism, but populism can be present in any ideology… but alas, I am a layman. It is proper to call what is happening in the US fascism, and there is now definitely some nazism present.
For folks confused on some of the leftist origins and definitions of populism, please read or listen to the recent book "The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Us" by Heather McGhee. It's even on Spotify for free. Basically, the right co-opts language and twists it and that is what happened here.
That doesn't change the fact that Nazism was a populist movement AND Trumpism is a populist movement. They won a popular vote, and they won it by exploiting populist rhetoric. It's populist to say "there are only two genders" it's populist to say "groceries are too expensive."
And the conman-in-chief didn’t even win the majority of votes. He won less than 50% of the vote in the 2024 election where at least twice as many Americans chose not to vote for Trump as voted for Trump.
I don't care where you get your lessons. I'm technically an Anarcho-Communist. As in very pro-democracy. Perhaps that kind of nuance is lost on you though.
I can live with anarcho-communist. The problem with communism though is it lead to authoritarism because of the centralisation by its nature. So I am very sceptic it would not turn into a dictatorship as it always did.
BTW, your avatar has 0 nuance.
I don't understand why some political parties are called populist. In Aotearoa New Zealand the party the media call populist is not popular! It is a fringe party that sometimes has no Members of Parliament.
They are the ones it is used for in New Zealand. It is our far right 'let's copy the USA' parties that are called populist.
The left wing Te Pati Maori & greens are never called populist.
Careful about which skinheads… SHARPs are the good guys (not certain if they were present in the US, they were here and got into some pretty decent street brawls with racist skinheads in Ottawa in the late 80s and early 90s)
Yep, and dolts like this guy are trying to divide progressives with screeching pedantic arguments. Trumpism IS a populist movement, no matter how much they hate to hear it. Their goals may not be populist, but their rhetoric and propaganda certainly are.
I think most Trump voters are okay with Nazism, if it's not called Nazism. They're okay with racism. They're okay with Christian extremism. They're okay with controlling women's bodies. They're okay with treating other people badly and less than.
More and more I see people using "populist" to mean "having a large number of individual supporters" and it's like... ok, first, the Nazis are in fact Nazis, and on the other hand, at this point aren't they just implying that democracy is bad?

It's still populism.

He literally lives in a gold plated house and his policies are billionaire tax cuts and deregulation
It's always been about his public bigotry and hatred.
describe people giving Nazi salutes and having views of supremacy .
Nazism is rooted in populism sharing “core traits.”
2) general concern for ordinary people
it's pretty much the opposite!
They might be rhetorically populist.
It does not make the movement populist. What are you talking about
i mean this isn't hard cmon
A lot of populist movements have been bad, historically.
Don't assume populist is good.
Hell, we have a long history of progressive movements selling out minorities for economic policy. It's shameful, but true.

Populism is a range of political stances that emphasize the idea of the common 'people' and often position this group in opposition to a perceived.
It does not imply that it's popular. Jesus Christ.
a. They are making Nazism seem benign.
b. They are making Leftist ideologies seem sinister.
But a bunch of activists want to defend specific media people from criticism in hopes of currying favor on their niche issues.
Why are you defending nazis?
That guy doing the nazi salute, arguably, the most powerful person on the planet that believes in eugenics and advocates for breeding programs is actually not a nazi, stop being divisive!!

MAGA have become goddamn Nazis.
Media literally warps your brain
Conservative Liberals want to work with Conservative Rightists against their ultimate enemy: The American People
IF YOU VOTED FOR OR CONTINUE TO SUPPORT DONALD TRUMP OR ANYONE WORKING WITH HIM, YOU'RE A NAZI.
The end.
No further discussion.
No redemption points.
I don't know how the term got twisted to mean people like Trump, but it pisses me off.

Sad truth.
They are NAZIS. THEY ACT & SAY WHAT NAZI DO & THINK .
I’m sorry if you want to refer to yourself as a populist and find RW populism distasteful, but I for one think Nazism is bad regardless of how it appeals to people
Seems important to point out that they share a global agenda with Trump, but…you know, the Indian, Brazilian, and Israeli guys don’t like Nazis
Populism is an electoral strategy, not an ideology. The term populist doesn’t refer to anything else but how a politician present themselves
Again, “popularism” seems to be the term you’re looking for
Populism is typically a bottom-up movement. Xenophobic/racist/tribalistic movements which are top-down and hierarchical from the start, reflect establishment power dynamics and come to power via support of the rich & privileged.
