This is overwhelming without being interesting. It’s music to manage projects to. Say what you will about jam bands, at least they’re playful and try to have fun.
Yeah, I think that’s a reasonable way of putting it. It’s either quiet, loud, or Really Loud like they’re trying to make something red line and it’s just not that interesting.
Side note: the Dead's "Space" instrumental jam suddenly got good at the Sphere. We hated that part of the shows in the 90s. The Sphere visuals are key, but it's also Micky Hart heating up some wood percussion instrument over a hot iron rod to change the pitch.
I also love that Mogwai will occasionally give you a wink and a nod, like "yeah, we know"
I saw them play a show once where they ended their set by walking off the stage, one by one, with their instruments left leaning against their amps, feeding back, until it was just drums and feedback...

Which is bad, because I love those “post-“ genres.
Space is no longer self-indulgent!
The John Mayer hype convicted me to go to an SF show a couple years back. Then the Sphere. Mayer is legit.
I loved Phish in the 90s - they were silly, and they knew they were silly, and it was a lot of fun.

like saying a rothko isn't good because it's not a warhol.
