My grand daughter takes improv as part of her drama course in high school. It’s not about the 3Rs but definitely about creativity, pivoting, collaboration and humour. All essential life skills

I hated it BUT I agree. If you were very shy like me teachers need to find you a way. And it should be core curriculum or as a minimum supporting presentations and public speaking as part of every subject

It’s not just about performers, public speaking and confidence.

An entire industry of tens of thousands of people work backstage and behind the lens. If it wasn’t for drama, very few of us would’ve found the secret door to an amazing career.

We tell stories to our very young children and their creativity and imagination blossoms. We then tell them it’s all irrelevant and superficial when they get to 11. Gove- the architect of this- has a lot to answer for. All the joy sucked out of education- a political decision.

My boy would seriously struggle with the social aspect of school if it wasn’t for the school play. He used the drama clubs to make himself known and confident. I’m so glad his school has them and I feel sorry for any pupils whose school drama budget is being cut.

English teachers have long struggled to fill the gaps left be failure to replace drama specialists. The subject teaches so much that is nothing to do with acting on stage: team-work; putting the group's needs before the individual's wishes; time management; flexible thinking; practical skills.

It could be saved by becoming an after-school club class where it would also get more time. We only got 1 hour a week, or 3 at GSCE level and this was never enough. Asipiring student still went to out of school drama clubs Many of which no longer exist.
