That skit in the nursing home “50 years later”. Flip passed away, but the rest are still at it. It’s weird to see them depicted in the skit as decrepit and senile 😆

I was going to say the same thing. Get's classic variety show airings were amazing. Not sure why they stopped? Was it Sony looking to spend as little as possible on the channels?

Much of the staff was laid off, management of the channel was taken over by GSN, and programming strategies were redefined. Jeff Meier, who had programmed getTV so inventively, moved to Crackle.

I can't comment on the state of the channel now, but what GSN did when they took over worked well, I thought. I'll always love the old getTV, and miss it, though.

All I can say about GSN is thank God there's BUZZR.

Still, it would be nice to get Pyramid, Tic Tac Dough, Joker's Wild, and the Barris game shows out of Sony's vaults and on a real classic game show channel that would appreciate them.

I worked for them for 2 years on getTV and Sony Movie Channel, then for another 6 months on a GSN blog, and had a generally positive experience. They showed me an enormous amount of respect, especially as they were getting acclimated during the changeover, and I will always be appreciative for that.

Jeff Meier is a underappreciated programming genius. And it's not impossible to air variety shows. I remember one smaller cable net (the name escapes me) running everything from "Tony Orlando & Dawn" to "The Ken Berry Wow Show." I think the concern is the interest vs cost

I really enjoyed working with Jeff and learned so much from him. Whenever he would mention an obscure show in team meetings he would say "Will and I will be the only ones who recognize this one."

But yes, the variety shows probably didn't draw the audience that ROCKFORD or MAGNUM reruns do.

Yes! I remember recording Frank Sinatra / Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye Xmas specials from Get. It's a shame they can't license / air them on, say, one Saturday in December.

Yes, it has. Also miss that they used to air old movies. At least CHCH in nearby Hamilton, Ontario airs old movies on weekends and, as Canadian OTA stations do not have subchannels, they use the full bandwidth of the frequency and look great.

I didn't know Canada had no sub channels. Do you know why? They've been such a gift to classic TV and movie fans here.
