I really enjoy and appreciate my Discover tab, but I understand completely how things can get out of hand. There has to be a middle-ground solution, right? Because it actually does help me discover and see things relevant to me, but clearly it also attracts some absolute alien commenters. Hmm.
I've had this problem on every site I've been on, ironically I feel like the fact that the difference between when it goes viral and when its just a normal post in your circle shows that bsky is actually better, as opposed to facebook or twitter where it instantly feels that way viral posts do here.
Social media needs more reply filters, sometimes the author doesn't want questions in their replies, or maybe one wants to hide negativity.
One could have AI browsing replies and hiding those based on the day's mood. API allows hiding replies, but doing it manually is like 2000's blog moderation.
@t3.gg @jimmyvanveen.com I've gone back over this entire thread starting with the original one. I've deleted my last meme post based on that review. The first thing I saw on this whole debacle was when Theo said the replies he'd gotten were why he doesn't use bsky and I incorrectly assumed...
...that he was taking shots at all users on this platform. I don't think I was alone in that but it doesn't make it right. I don't usually get involved in stuff without trying to understand the nuances and today I jumped in with both feet, so apologies for adding stress unnecessarily.
I just think everyone on the whole can do a better job to make communities such as these more healthy. Just because someone is popular doesn't mean they own the entire responsibility for shaping the public discourse, we all own a part of it.
In part, this is a design flaw in Twitter/bluesky. You can't click anywhere to see what a given post was a reply to. It is also clear how to post a reply, but (AFAIK) much harder to read other replies. (Impossible for posts that are only an image.)
His video was actually what got me to start following people here. Iβm feeling the brain sludge from algorithms, hoping to take more of life offline and be very intentional about my internet connections.
Really good explanation. I wonder why that's the case though, is it that twitter does a better job of sorting replies or does Bluesky just have a lot more bots because the API is more accessible
I absolutely get not wanting to deal with the hoi polloi of social media. But the reason you're posting on social media is for the opportunity to go viral. Otherwise you'd be posting this stuff on your blog that no one reads. So it's difficult to feel sorry for those who seek attention getting it.
Things are awful because a person who makes their living off of the internet can't post on an open and public forum without drive by comments. Won't someone please think of the content creators? It's almost like these creators want to benefit from the network effect without the downsides. Oh well.
There is absolutely nothing stopping any of these people from creating their own private communities. They don't want that though. They want the engagement. They want to have their cake and to eat it too.
This is actually a perfect summary of the problem.
The righteousness of the reply guys here is unreal. Their replies are almost never related to the OP, just bad misinterpretations of what they might be saying.
The lack of relevance is the problem. Just like your reply here :)
Unless you can name another social media site where going viral has a better outcome, then what you're describing is a problem with going viral itself, not a problem with going viral on Bluesky
I was watching your video on Algorithms on Youtube while scrolling here and .... Here you are on this site. I'm not subscribed to you on either platform.
Replies from "the other app". In my view the difference to here is you are seeing all the replies, whereas X probably doesn't notify you most of the time.
From what I saw, you got those replies AFTER you called out the quality of the replies here i.e. after you stirred the pot. I get it though, this kind of drama gets you engagement in both places, and that's your raison d'etre.
That doesn't appear to be true because you didn't block anyone at the time. These are the timestamps of your most recent blocks. The one from 11d ago was before that post, and then the other 3 were AFTER you called out the quality of the replies.
I have had past issues with the Bluesky audience too. Ppl will start screaming at you for no reason, or will get rude at you for simply posting in "their" thread, or assume you must be an enemy and be really hostile. It kind of sucks from a platform that touts itself as a "Better place than X"
The weirdest one for me is this one girl who followed me wearing fatigues with carrying an M-60....like some type of threat...these people are deranged.
FWIW, Bluesky now has a setting you can put on your posts so that only mutuals can comment. If I were getting the bs that you are, I would definitely use that.
These are bots made to test if their AI can successfully go against anything that was posted and generate engagement out of it
The right is then gonna use this "technology" specifically for political posts
I am too stoned...I followed this rabbit hole of a thread to the point where I don't care that I don't care what the original point of this discussion even was. So, stick that in your pipe and smoke it
I donβt have a βfollowingβ on par with you so Iβve been thankfully spared this nuisance, but Iβve certainly seen the vitriol spewed your way.
My experience has been almost entirely positive FWIW (only to say itβs not wall-to-wall hate)

I have high hopes for this platform, but I think it's going to be a very long time before it improves π«€
Just remember.. they track how long you look at post.. oh.. you slowed your scroll for x.. noted.

Hiding the replies sounds like a good goal. And you're right, doing something manually takes forever and these bot times it's impossible to keep up.
I just think everyone on the whole can do a better job to make communities such as these more healthy. Just because someone is popular doesn't mean they own the entire responsibility for shaping the public discourse, we all own a part of it.
the first step is acceptance--you seem to be tacitly acknowledging that you're being weird
can you take the second step?

So, your Youtube video is a bit on point.
Very different from the βNOBODY ASKED FOR YOU AI SLOP, DIE CEO SCUMβ I got here.
Tangentially, I hope BlueSky adds Reddit-like entities - we could call them bs/clouds (tm me)(analogous to r/subreddits).

Donβt know why we canβt all get along.
There is no problem and some people just like to complain.
