Anyone else find Christmas ads distasteful? We’re still enduring a Tory cost of living crisis, many won’t be wearing fancy clothes, able to buy fancy presents or put on a King Henry VIII style banquet. Not all families are happy. It never snows. They sell a dream that makes people feel like failures

Christmas is a cunts game enit?

As to the ads, pandering to consumerism.
Count your blessings not your problems.
Count your blessings not your problems- going to carry that with me. 😊
They no longer tell us a product available and what it does, we're sold fluffy aspirational nonsense.
Take car ads are the worst ... empty roads, never a traffic light or pot hole in sight.
I choose never to buy anything I see advertised.
Xmas dinner will be a beef stew, from the slow cooker.
Many of us have painful memories of Xmas.
I don't do it either. I give my son his presents in the morning, then he goes to his dad's/ grandparents' for the afternoon.
I celebrate the New Year and a fresh page instead.
Would love to share this from Jon of Sheffield band Reverend & The Makers. I don't think he or they are on Bluesky yet.
Have a look, please share & do your stuff Bluesky.

As it stands £400 has gone just on trainers this year, and we've been told from work that there will be no bonus and potentially no hourly increase next year.
This time of year causes so much anxiety and makes it an awful time for so many.
Mind you, I've enjoyed Kevin the Carrot, and the Gnomes.
As the banks are raising mortgage rates again its going to be bad for more people, so yes.
Everyone was happier, not worried about spending "enough", getting into debt for Christmas - as we're encouraged to do by the adverts. Christmas became spending time together. It brought us closer.
Christmas ads went through a little golden period for a few years but they're mostly now just shameless capitalism once again.
(Example of a good one: the John Lewis ad where the little boy is excited to give his parents a gift. 2013 maybe?)
Something they want
Something they need
Something to wear and
Something to read
I think that's good for managing expectations when younger.
There's a lot to be said for managing expectations. The financial difficulty my parents must have got into buying presents for me and my siblings, I can't imagine.
NOBODY should feel like they're failing Christmas, but the media seem determined to do so.
'They sold me a dream of Christmas...'
I love Christmas. I’m not naive enough to think I’m not influenced but I’m bloody minded enough to say FRO with that crap.
Due to money creation in COVID the stock market is inflated and is expected to crash this why Buffett has large Cash reserves not shares maybe why companies increase their profits causing the inflation to justify their stock price
No sign of anyone cutting back on takeaways or manicures.
The towns full of pramsters with babies covered in Gregg's pastie crumbs.
They'd never think of making a sandwich to take out to the Neil at when there's free money to be had.
She knew her homemade advent calendar was gonna have notes from me saying I was gonna give her a piggyback ride & no chocolate
Christmas is what you make it
It only lasts a couple of minutes though.
That's the definition of the majority of all ads.
That’s going to get busy
And don’t get me started on the feckin nice or naughty list!🤬😰.
For too many c/mas is shit.
But we do get snow and a Swedish Christmas smörgåsbord. But then again the people don't mind paying higher taxes the bosses pay a living wage working with the unions. The UK could learn a lot from a nanny state.
God jul ..merry Christmas 🎄
I know that's not exactly quite the same as the point you are making but Xmas in general can be absolutely gut wrenching in certain circumstances so I definitely get where you are coming from here
We can’t afford to put the oven on in the real world to cook 1% of food displayed.
It may be tra la la time for many but for most Xmas is about extreme financial stress and depression struggling not to disappoint our kids.
And a very accurate slogan for the collapse of American democracy.
All Labour’s fault 👇👇👇
Saw your note on the dark side and been looking for you trust feeling better here
Yet "everyone" is doing it because they think "everyone" else is.
(But I hate capitalism so I may be biased 😅)
But yeah, feels more distasteful at the moment.
