People still haven't understood tarrifs. It is not just a single charge. When the charge hits components or materials, it gets very complicated to calculate
Some of the stores here in Canada are already marking products with tariffs. And have got a receipt the other day from a store, and they did have a line for tariff, thankfully, the product I got had 0.00 for tariff, this time, but tomorrow no doubt will be a different story. Agree so much with this.
Perfect, except change the line item to "Trump Tariff." Remember, Magats have really severe short-term memory loss issues (see 2016-2020) and need reminding constantly.
And thats exactly what is fucking wrong with our society. These are costs that are naturally supposed to be paid by the corp, not the consumer. We have gotten accustomed to being ripped off by the man who has no business ethics whatsoever.
You have to declare purchases, limit is $800... And if you don't declare it, you can be fined. Not a good idea...but not everyone is dissuaded by the illegality of something....
The problem with this is the end user will have no means of validating its accuracy and it would definitely be abused by corporations to raise profits.
This also helps the consumer as if the increase is just added to the price, even when tariff is lifted, price would probably stay higher. So making it a line item is better for all.
Same as the trucking industry who must show a separate line item for fuel surcharge, which goes way back to the days when fuel spiked, and it has since become permanent, but is a separate line item on freight invoices.
Sometimes I wonder about inside trading. Has anyone else thought about the markets crashing & then there are some who know which tariffs & when they will be removed? A person could make a killing buying low & selling high. Not saying anyone is doing that but for those who have oodles of spare money?
You are correct. The businesses don't want to pay the minimum wage that just went up. They will get their bonus one way or the other. Prices almost never go back down.
Since the tarrif is included in the cost of the product, it is also included in the markup margin. When you buy the product, you pay the sales tax on the tariff.
Some business have razor thin margins. Costs are high these days too, esp for small/med businesses &restaurants. Can’t cover 30+%
No large Corp got large by absorbing rising costs like ridiculously high tariffs. Operating in capitalist society, not charity. They need to maintain their margins too.😔
The whole fam got new phones not long after the election bc of the tariff threat & we kinda felt like we were overreacting. I’m not glad the tariffs came to pass but I am glad we got it done. Now we have phones that will hopefully last awhile + our old phones to fall back on if they don’t.
Yeah until they start losing money hand over fist because we can’t afford their products! And thats why they think they are recession proof! They are not! It’s the little people like us that keep them in business!
That's not the way it works. The retail price of the iPhone may be that much, but the tariff is on the production cost when Apple imports it. Say the retail price is $1,000 but the cost to Apple is $400, a 43% tariff would be $172.
Easy for items that are purchased and resold- more difficult to consider over the whole supply chain for things manufactured here (and the indirect costs of tariffs in the form of tools etc getting more expensive)
I think one of the benefits of spelling it out like in the first post is that makes it harder to just jack up prices out of opportunism. Obviously there’s always still going to be bad actors though.
That is an EXCELLENT suggestion. And maybe - just MAYBE - Big Business might pick up on it, if those tariffs start hurting their bottom line enough. Personally, I'd love to see the American consumer batten down the purses & wallets - and prepare to limit spending to the bare necessities for a while.
I heard someone say the other day,"It's patriotic to pay more." When I had to listen to them about $3.00 egg prices under joe Biden. Fucking Maga dumbasses.
That would wake ppl up that don’t understand higher prices are a result of tariffs.
In Europe - the VAT is a line item on receipt.
Also, prices for items on the shelf show the VAT.
We could have a line item of Tariffs so people could see it in black and white.
Other countries also have versions - eg in NZ its GST Goods and Services Tax.
It’s also one of the many examples of where Trump doesn’t understand tariffs - equating VAT, GST etc as tariffs but they apply to every service and product regardless of where from. It includes products made in country.
I can't see this working. The tariff is paid first by the importer, they then keystone price the item (double) to the distributor, then they do the same to the grocery store, then they do the same to the end consumer. The .25 tariff on a dollar ends up costing $2 by the end of the line.
Tariffs are paid by the importer and based on the amount the importer pays, essentially on the wholesale cost. Your example, based on the final retail price, is misleading. The real inflationary effect of tariffs is bad enough, no need to lie about it.
And all countries around the world should mandate that every wholly or partially US-made product bear a Trump-faced sticker to disgust people from ever buying fascist-led goods.
I stopped buying non-necessities on inauguration day. REFUSE TO FEED THE TRUMPELON MONSTER! Don't spend, don't buy, don't work (for greed monsters), don't bow!
The tariff applies to the import price of the good, not the retail price. Although retailers will probably take the opportunity to increase margins by applying the tarrif to the final sale price.

But corporations are greedy
However, tariffs are not a percentage of retail price.
Label it what it is...
-Trump Tax
It’s not just Trump
Mike Johnson led Republicans in Congress put deranged tyrant before country
CONGRESS has authority over tariffs
Republicans congress chose to become impotent and a blind slave to Trump.
Important to remind voters
So what’s to stop Americans from visiting Canada & buying Apple stuff instead, and smuggle it back home?
As foreigners they can also avoid Canadian sales taxes! VAT refund.
This also helps the consumer as if the increase is just added to the price, even when tariff is lifted, price would probably stay higher. So making it a line item is better for all.
the trumpf Tax. just
Wait till the Price
Gouging begins
Trump Tariff: $800
State Sales Tax: etc
I suspect they’ll instead try to make it invisible.
If I gotta see how Red #47 all up in everything on the grocery shelves, I better see the trump tax appear EVERYWHERE!!! 💯
That's quite optimistic.
The customer pays for the tarrif three times.
Markup % 1.35
Sale price $135
Sales tax %5 $6.75
Customer cost $141.75
Product cost $100
25% tarriff $125
Markup 1.35 168.75
Sales tax 5% $8.44
Customer cost $177.19

Ours is 11%! and climbing..
Those would also raise the base cost of the product.
They are using it to stoke a buying frenzy. Making it sound like an insider deal...get your deal today!!!
That's what business does.
"Cost absorbed by importer = $0.00"
"Cost absorbed by exporter = $0.00"
They would have only one question:
"Why does this cost so fucking much?"
Do the Math...

It’s the consumer that pays it.
It greatly reduces tax cheating by companies, because they want to get VAT refunded in the end.
BOYCOTT AND SHUT THEM DOWN!
Keep the effort up, Canadians. We have this in hand.

Is sales tax calculated at the cost + tariff price?
Here in Wisconsin, that would be an extra, extra $35
So do these grifting assholes in Congress…😁
Bring it up with your supervisors maybe just maybe other retailers would follow!
that's a big cikle you have
And highlight it in yellow!
