There’s also, I’m guessing, a clearly very young demo on this site. 9/11 was extremely traumatizing to the nation. We wanted retribution and didn’t care how. Once that faded…we realized we screwed up.

W Bush won comfortably in 2004. 3 years into the 911 retribution campaign. I think it wasn’t until Katrina where people felt comfortable saying things like “he screwed up the hurricane AND we still haven’t gotten Al Qaeda!”

Rural (exurb?) MN. I told my 7th gr class in the WEEKS after 9/11 that "my dad says we'll never win in Afghanistan. We'll be there for 20 years and he'll send me to Mexico before I get drafted" and let me tell you - my teacher called me a traitor. 🤣

I was at UM then. I recall nothing re: Afghanistan. Lots of ny-based students with strong opinions as well, not many nuanced discussions in my classes or on campus. Iraq I think got more protests but still a relatively minority group.

I was at U. of M. during Desert Storm. Some protests, but not a whole bunch. Bush-the-elder spoke at our graduation and we had only a few protesters in the audience. Also, the US actually didn't do the full-Iraq thing, because the stated mission was to free Kuwait and that happened. (1/2)

Marched in Cincinnati against the bombing of Afghanistan in late Sept/early October 2001. We had a decent sized crowd as I remember. But yeah, it was not a popular position overall. I wish I could take some satisfaction in having been right but that's impossible considering the carnage.

They did an astounding job of tying hyper patriotism to supporting their war. And if you didn’t it was that you didn’t support the troops not that you didn’t support sending them to Iraq.
